The 2026 Mazda CX-5 debuts as the third generation of the automaker's best-selling SUV, featuring a roomier interior, updated technology, and a sleeker exterior. Mazda states that since its debut in 2012, the CX-5 has sold over 1.6 million units in the United States and more than 4.5 million units globally, which explains why this redesign builds on the original concept rather than starting over.
Compared to the outgoing model, the 2026 Mazda CX-5 grows in overall size to provide more passenger and cargo space, features a more spacious interior with upgraded materials, and introduces the brand's largest-ever infotainment touchscreen with Google Built-in.
The CX-5 is equipped with a four-cylinder engine and a conventional automatic transmission, paired with standard all-wheel drive (AWD). Mazda has confirmed a hybrid version for 2027, marking the first time for the CX-5.
Mazda says that the 2026 CX-5 exterior design draws inspiration from stylish, functional "wearable gear" and traditional Japanese kigumi woodworking, which uses precision joinery instead of nails or screws. This results in a more sculpted, chiseled look that enhances their existing CX lineup.
The design features sharper lighting elements and replaces the rear logo badge with “MAZDA” lettering. Compared to the previous model, the new compact SUV is 4.5 inches longer, with a 3-inch longer wheelbase and a half-inch wider. The redesigned CX-5 aims to provide a more spacious cabin while keeping its familiar footprint on the road. Available 19-inch wheels complete the look.
Inside, Mazda concentrated on making the 2026 CX-5's cabin feel more spacious and practical than before. It provides more room and comfort, creating a larger and more functional interior. The redesigned interior features wider door openings, making it easier to get in and out, load cargo or kids, and install car seats compared to previous models.
Rear passengers enjoy more leg, knee, and headroom compared to the previous-generation model. According to Mazda, the available panoramic sunroof enhances the sense of space by allowing in more light.
The cargo area also receives an upgrade, increasing in length by nearly two inches and in height by one inch. The lower lift-in height from the ground makes packing the trunk easier. Mazda emphasizes high-quality materials throughout the cabin, with subtle touches like seven-color ambient lighting on the front doors and a large center console to create a comfortable atmosphere inside.
The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, delivering 187 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. All models come with standard AWD.
Mazda states it recalibrated this version of the 2.5-liter engine to provide sharper throttle response and a quieter, more relaxed demeanor, depending on the driving style.
Shoppers looking for better fuel economy will have to wait, unfortunately, as a hybrid version isn't planned to be released until 2027.
Updates to the tech are a major selling point for the 2026 CX-5. It's hard to miss the new 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display—the largest ever in a Mazda—placed in the center of the dashboard, which features Google Built-in. This provides access to Google Maps, the Google Play Store for compatible in-car apps, and Gemini, Google's AI assistant, which Mazda says can handle complex tasks without drivers needing to memorize exact commands or phrases.
Owners who sign into a Google account will gain access to a personalized Maps experience, including saved locations and search history. Mazda also states that the system is built for over-the-air updates, enabling new branded and third-party features to be added in the future.
When it comes to safety, Mazda reaffirms its commitment and highlights its strong track record. Drivers can expect the standard advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) suite, although Mazda has not yet disclosed the details.
The compact SUV segment is as crowded as it is popular, and the redesigned CX-5 will face tough competition, competing directly with well-known models like the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4, all of which now offer hybrid and/or plug-in hybrid versions.
Mazda's pitch continues to be a blend of upscale design, everyday practicality, and a fun driving experience. With more interior space, a bolder look, and the inclusion of large-screen technology with Google Built-in, the 2026 CX-5 aims to appeal to buyers seeking a mainstream SUV with premium features.
