Inspired by the third-generation “Fox body” Mustang produced from 1979 to 1993, the new 2026 Ford Mustang FX appearance package blends retro styling cues with modern engineering, creating a totally rad pony car, to borrow an oft-heard ‘80s expression.
It’s no secret that automakers, particularly those of domestic origin, habitually play the retro card, especially with their most iconic models. With the new 2026 Mustang FX package, Ford is doing just that, celebrating the Fox body era of its classic muscle car, bringing back stylistic elements from its sporty coupe and convertible produced primarily in the 1980s.
Available on Mustang GT Premium coupe and convertible models with automatic or manual transmission, the FX appearance package introduces two new wheel designs—one based on the existing Mustang’s split five-spoke 19-inch rims, the other drawing inspiration from Fox body-era wheels and only available on the optional Performance package. Finished in mid-gloss Oxford White with color-matched center caps, both wheel designs feature a stamped “Mustang GT” wordmark in an all-new font.
Continuing the white color scheme, Ford affixes a trio of Oxford White badges—5.0-liter, GT, and the Mustang pony—to the car’s exterior. The optional Performance package features Oxford White “nostrils” within the gloss black grille (the standard Mustang FX has gray-colored nostrils). White taillights complete the look. Ford says the special taillights and the 19-inch wheels included in the Performance pack will be available to order via the Ford Performance Parts catalog so other Mustang owners can accessorize their vehicles.
Moving inside, the new Mustang FX features perforated leather seats with black and white elements reminiscent of the seat inserts found in the Fox body Mustang. The inserts are available on the standard bucket seats or optional coupe-only Recaro sport seats. Meanwhile, the seats, dashboard, door panels, and steering wheel feature dual-contrast stitching comprised of City Silver and Adriatic Blue colors. A Mustang GT badge in special FX font is also affixed to the instrument panel.
Ford also announced two new colors for the 2026 Mustang lineup. Last available in 2019, Orange Fury Metallic Tricoat returns to the Mustang color palette, along with the all-new Adriatic Blue Metallic. The latter hue is reminiscent of the Teal color available on Fox body Mustangs. Ford says both colors will be available on the Mustang EcoBoost, GT, and Dark Horse. New seat belt color options include International Orange, Prime Blue, and Black with a red stripe.
Customers can order the 2026 Ford Mustang, including the new FX appearance package and the FX Performance package, in late June 2025.
With the Chevrolet Camaro officially gone, the Dodge Charger is the most natural Mustang FX competitor. However, at the moment, the Dodge is currently only available as a two-door electric car (a sedan and a gas version are set to arrive later in 2025). The Mustang offers more choice, as it is currently available as a coupe or convertible with a manual or automatic transmission. Other potential Mustang FX competitors include the Nissan Z, Toyota GR Supra, and Toyota GR86.
As a domestic performance enthusiast who learned to drive in the ‘80s, I love seeing cars like the Mustang FX that evoke a sense of nostalgia and take me back to the “good old days.” I think there are a lot of other muscle and pony car enthusiasts who feel the same way. Whether or not the Mustang FX will resonate with the current generation of young buyers remains to be seen. But as someone who was school-aged when the original Fox body Mustangs rolled off the assembly line, I’m excited to see this new package.
