2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Preview

Chris Teague | Nov 16, 2023

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the more popular electric vehicle (EV) models on sale in 2023, but it still needs a tried-and-true performance variant to match its corporate sibling, the Kia EV6 GTHyundai teased the Ioniq 5 N earlier this year and finally took the wraps off the hot hatchback at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed in England. The automaker has now fully revealed the new Ioniq 5 N at the Los Angeles Auto Show, releasing more information on the quick EV.

The 2025 Ioniq 5 N has a significant power bump over the standard model. Like other N variants, it will offer a temporary boost function with even more power. It will also sport a few exclusive styling elements to set it apart and improve its aerodynamics at high speeds. Most importantly, Hyundai equips the EV with a range of features intended to boost driving engagement and improve its feel as a performance vehicle.

Though it is close to the standard EV in appearance, the Ioniq 5 N gets a few exclusive touches to help it stand out. According to Hyundai, the SUV is 0.79 inches lower, 2 inches wider, and 3.2 inches longer to accommodate its more aggressive bodywork and improve performance.

The Ioniq 5 N has a unique front fascia with aerodynamic shapes to channel air for better cooling. Hyundai also equips exclusive 21-inch forged aluminum wheels with summer performance tires for the best possible grip. Around the back, the N gets a wing spoiler and a prominent rear diffuser. A unique brake light design, N-exclusive bumper cover, and reflective graphics round out the look.

The Ioniq 5 N's interior is surprisingly similar to the standard model, but exclusive materials and accents exist throughout. The steering wheel, seats, door scuff panels, pedals, and more feature N branding, while the center console offers knee pads and shin supports.

According to Hyundai, all the Ioniq 5 N's materials and design elements make track driving easier. For example, the seats are covered in suede-like Alcantara, which grips passengers' clothing to hold them in place. Other features support the driver, such as the center console and sliding armrest, which include padding to support the driver during cornering. Hyundai didn't forget sustainability with the upgrades, as it employed recycled PET yarn from PET bottles and a range of nature-derived materials you can easily recycle later.

Using the temporary boost mode, Hyundai boosts the Ioniq 5's output to 641 horsepower, but the standard output is a still-healthy 601 hp. The dual electric motors reach 21,000 RPM and pair with a higher-output 84-kWh battery pack. Hyundai says the drivetrain is good for a 3.25-second zero-to-60-mph time and an electronically limited 162 mph top speed.

Hyundai says it will confirm range numbers closer to the N's launch date, but the EV gets a track-based state-of-charge monitoring system that tracks battery consumption and recalculates range each lap. According to the automaker, the EV can charge up to 238 kW and recover from 10 to 80 percent charge in 18 minutes. It also features a vehicle-to-load function that powers external electrical equipment and even charges other EVs.

The N Launch Control system works with the temporary N Grin Boost function and provides three traction levels for the fastest start. The vehicle's range tracking also considers track driving and can recalculate the number of miles remaining after each lap. Though it shares a body with the standard Ioniq 5, Hyundai says the N has 42 additional welds and 2.1 meters of additional adhesives to stiffen the body.

Hyundai says the N gets more thermal management equipment than the standard model, with improved cooling and battery preconditioning functions. The N-tuned brakes feature 400mm front rotors and 360mm rear rotors. Hyundai says they designed the brakes with cooling in mind. Other functions include N Torque Distribution and an N Race driving mode that lets the driver modulate power output to extend range.

Hyundai also upgraded the Ioniq 5 N's brakes over the standard model. The front rotors measure a whopping 15.75 inches, while the rears check in at 14.2 inches. Hyundai recalibrated the regenerative braking system for better stopping performance and says it prevents brake fade by using the electric motors to slow the car.

The interesting N Active Sound + and N e-shift functions simulate a gas-powered sports car's sound and shift feel, which should give the Ioniq 5 N a more engaging feel than its competitors. Hyundai's torque distribution system allows 11 settings, and the electronic limited-slip differential helps increase traction in corners. Further improving handling, Hyundai added 42 welding points and 6.9 feet of adhesive over the standard vehicle.

As of this writing, Hyundai hasn't outlined the Ioniq 5 N's full suite of safety tech, but expect it to be quite similar to the standard model's feature set. It comes standard with blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning, parking-assistance sensors, lane-keeping assistance and lane-centering assistance, speed-limit assist, a driver monitoring systemSafe Exit Assist, and a highway driving-assistance system.

As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn't rated the crashworthiness of the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. However, the NHTSA did give the all-wheel-drive version of the structurally similar 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 the highest-possible 5-star overall rating. Likewise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has yet to test the new 2025 N. However, it did give the 2023 Ioniq 5 a Top Safety Pick+ rating—the Institute's highest accolade—for the 2022 calendar year.

Hyundai hasn't shared details on the Ioniq 5 N's tech setup, but expect it to retain the standard model's 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. The system brings Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, multiple-device Bluetooth connectivity, multiple USB-A ports, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A Bose premium stereo is available, along with a head-up display and wireless phone charging.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Competitors - Find the best Hyundai Ioniq 5 deals!

The Ioniq 5 N will face off against its Kia EV6 GT corporate counterpart more than any other vehicle on the market. While the Kia EV6 shares a vehicle platform and some tech with the Ioniq 5, the two vary in critical ways. Buyers may also eye the Tesla Model Y Performance or the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. Having said that, the Ioniq 5 N may outprice all of them, but we'll need to wait until closer to launch for confirmation.
