The Porsche Cayenne stirred emotions when it arrived 20 years ago. Since then, the SUV has become a popular mainstay in the German automaker’s lineup. Now in its third generation, Porsche is giving the Cayenne a significant mid-cycle refresh that brings updated exterior styling, more power for all powertrains, and a tech-packed interior with more screens and features.

Porsche offers the Cayenne in several configurations, including base, E-Hybrid, Cayenne S, and Cayenne Turbo GT. The base engine is a turbocharged V6, and Porsche is bringing back the V8 for the mid-range S trim. The E-Hybrid delivers more power and will have a decent all-electric range, though Porsche hasn’t released estimates yet. The new SUVs are available for order now, ahead of an expected release in the summer of 2023.

The 2024 Cayenne gets a new front-end design with reshaped fenders and an updated hood shape. The headlights are also new and join the SUV’s unique 3-dimensional-look taillights. Porsche offers three new colors for the SUV, including Algarve Blue Metallic, Montego Blue Metallic, and Arctic Grey. Wheel sizes range from 20 to 22 inches, and several designs are available.

Most of the changes to the new Cayenne’s interior focus on its tech, which means the SUV’s upscale interior carries over in most areas. The Cayenne comes standard with leather upholstery, but Porsche offers a range of leather and material upgrades. Buyers can choose from several seat center and stitching options, and three seat types are available. Option packages bring other features, including a panoramic sunroof, ambient interior lighting, power seat upgrades, and custom color palettes.
Porsche updates the Cayenne’s powertrains for 2024 and revives the V8 engine for the long-running S trim. The base turbocharged V6 makes 348 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. The Cayenne S now gets a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 making 468 hp and 442 pound-feet of torque, while the Turbo GT gets a twin-turbo V8 with output cranked to 650 hp.
The E-Hybrid gets a new electric motor design and an output increase to 463 hp. Porsche hasn’t detailed range estimates for the hybrid yet. However, the battery pack increases by almost 50 percent, which should improve on the outgoing model’s 17 miles of electric range.
The Cayenne’s safety tech gets a refresh for 2024, including improvements to several optional systems. The active speed-limit assist system now accounts for traffic laws when managing cruise control speed. The adaptive cruise control system features an evasion-assist system that can help the driver swerve around obstacles, and the new turn-assist function watches for potential collisions at low speeds. That said, most features are optional, but the standard tech includes a rearview camera mirror, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and parking sensors.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety hasn’t crash-tested the 2024 Cayenne and likely never will because of the costs involved. Likewise, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn’t rated the crashworthiness of the Cayenne.
The Cayenne gains the screen tech first introduced in the Taycan EV, which means screens on top of screens. The SUV now gets a 12.3-inch center touchscreen running the automaker’s newest Porsche Communication Management system. Spotify and Apple Music run natively, and the system offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
The partially analog gauge cluster is now fully digital, and Porsche says most functions the driver uses are either on or very close to the steering wheel. Buyers can also add a new 10.9-inch passenger-side display that allows video and other content streaming. It features a special coating to prevent driver distraction while in use.
The 2024 Porsche Cayenne’s most direct competitor is likely the BMW X5. It’s available in a variety of configurations, including an M-tuned variant and a full-fat X5 M. The Land Rover Range Rover Sport is another great alternative, though the newest models don’t have anywhere near the performance of the Porsche or the BMW.
