Land Rover’s Range Rover line has blossomed into a broad product offering with an SUV for almost any buyer. One of the newest entrants is the Range Rover Velar, a super stylish luxury SUV with a sleek design and a stunning interior. Though we’re just starting 2023, Land Rover’s hard at work on the 2024 models, and the new Velar is available for order now with a fresh face and updated tech features.
Land Rover offers the 2024 Velar in four main configurations and with two powertrain options. The P250 S and P250 Dynamic SE get a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and the P400 Dynamic SE and P400 Dynamic HSE get a turbocharged inline-6 with mild-hybrid assist.
The Velar’s sleek nose gets a refresh for 2024 with a new grille and an updated headlight design. It gets the brand’s signature LED daytime running lights. In the back, the exaggerated rear overhang “adds to its muscular stance.” Land Rover also installed a new lower rear bumper and LED taillights with a flashy 3D effect.
Land Rover offers a leather-free cabin option with new seat designs and unique materials. Danish company Kvadrat provided wool that the automaker says is 58 percent lighter than leather. Land Rover highlights it with a diamond herringbone perforation pattern, and the automaker says it torture-tested the material to ensure it can stand up to at least 10 years of heavy use and wear.
The new Velar is available with three leather color themes, including Cloud, Raven Blue, and Deep Garnet. New chrome interior accents appear on the center console, air vents, and steering wheel, and Land Rover offers two aluminum choices or wood accents. A new cabin air filtration system provides CO2 management and monitors air quality to make automatic adjustments.
Two powertrain choices are available for the 2024 Velar. The entry-level engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that makes 247 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. The uprated engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 rated at 395 hp and 405 pound-feet of torque. Both powertrains include an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD).
The inline-6 comes with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that Land Rover says improves acceleration and makes the automatic engine start/stop system more responsive. As in other Land Rover models, the Velar is available with an air suspension system, and the P400 models come standard with adaptive suspension.
Though stylish, the Velar is still a Land Rover, and as such, it must perform off-road. In addition to AWD, the SUV comes with Terrain Response 2, which brings modes for driving in grass, gravel, snow, mud/ruts, sand, and more.
Land Rover hasn’t detailed all of the new Velar’s safety equipment, but it looks similarly equipped to its predecessor. Standard features will likely include lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
Land Rover vehicles aren’t always subjected to the same crash tests that higher-volume automakers’ models are. The costs and lower production numbers make it impractical to test all models from all automakers. That doesn’t mean the Velar is unsafe, just that it’s too costly to smash a bunch of them up for testing. Therefore, no crash-test ratings are available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The new 11.4-inch curved-glass touchscreen highlights the 2024 Range Rover Velar’s cabin. Land Rover positioned it to appear as a floating panel on the dash and is responsible for handling climate controls, seat settings, audio controls, and vehicle drive modes. The updated system has a pre-drive function that displays on startup and provides settings for commonly used features, such as defrost and seat heaters.
Land Rover simplified its newest Pivi Pro infotainment interface to navigate almost any function in two taps or less. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and an embedded eSIM enables connected apps like Spotify to stream directly through the infotainment system. Amazon Alexa is also standard.
Active noise cancellation comes standard, using external sound frequencies and the SUV’s stereo to counter road and wind noise. Available features include a Meridian 3D surround-sound audio system with a 750-watt amplifier.
The Range Rover Velar competes most closely with the BMW X5 and Porsche Macan. The X5 is a more mainstream luxury SUV, though it’s available in a rowdy X5 M format. The Macan offers a sportier experience with several available performance and trim upgrades. It’s not an off-road SUV, instead bringing canyon carving as its primary offering.
