The Range Rover Sport has always been a standout in Land Rover’s lineup, offering a more engaging driving experience than its full-fat counterpart. Still, it retains much of the rugged off-road capability for which the brand is known and celebrated. Land Rover has offered an athletic SVR with a rowdy V8 engine for a while now. For 2024, the automaker is introducing a more powerful SV model. It gets a 626-horsepower twin-turbo V8, an aggressive design, and a level of exclusivity not seen in other Range Rover Sport variants.
The 2024 Range Rover Sport SV will start as an invite-only affair, as Land Rover will offer the SV Edition One to its most special clients (currently, every unit is spoken for). The SUV has air suspension and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes that help it perform better than any previous Sport model.
Though we’re clearly looking at a Range Rover Sport, the SV is notably more aggressive than the standard SUV. Depending on the drive mode, it also rides up to 25 mm (just shy of an inch) lower than the standard Range Rover Sport. The front-end design plays a significant role in that aggressive look, bringing large grille areas for improved airflow and a low-to-the-ground lip. Land Rover fitted carbon fiber accents on the grille surround, hood vents, and side vents, and the quad tailpipes come wrapped in carbon.
The Range Rover Sport SV comes standard with performance seats that feature integrated headrests and aggressive bolstering to hold passengers in place. Land Rover offers a new “3D knit to form” textile upholstery, and the seatbacks feature satin carbon fiber. The shift knobs have translucent edges with lighting elements, and Land Rover makes the gear shift from a unique black ceramic material.
Range Rovers are no strangers to rowdy V8s, but the Range Rover Sport SV is on another level. It gets an exclusive twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, making 626 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque—a 51-hp and 38-pound-feet bump over the Range Rover Sport SVR’s supercharged V8. According to Land Rover, the run to 60 mph takes as little as 3.6 seconds, and the heavy SUV can keep accelerating all the way to 180 mph.
Land Rover installed air suspension with pitch and roll control to keep everything planted, and the SUV rolls on 23-inch lightweight carbon fiber wheels. The active suspension features height-adjustable air springs and auto-leveling during cornering and acceleration. Further weight reduction is available with carbon ceramic brakes and a carbon fiber hood.
Fat, 305-section rear tires pair with 285-section front tires, and the SUV comes standard with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires. Those meaty tires enable lateral acceleration of more than 1.1g, which Land Rover says is a 22-percent improvement over the SVR. The statement is even more impressive considering the SVR ran performance summer tires.
Land Rover vehicles are not always crash-tested because of the extreme expense of repeatedly slamming six-figure SUVs into barriers. That doesn’t mean they’re any less safe than competing models, and the Range Rover Sport SV comes with a load of standard driver aids. The list includes automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, a 3D surround-view camera, parking aids, traffic-sign recognition, and more.
The Range Rover Sport SV comes standard with a 13.1-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The SV model adds a “Body and Soul Seat” (BASS) system that includes audio equipment in the seat. It creates vibrations with the music and works in concert with the 29-speaker Meridian sound system.
The Range Rover Sport SV competes against several avant-garde performance SUVs, including the Audi SQ7, which isn’t as muscular but features plenty of passenger space and a superb interior. Buyers may also eye the BMW X5 M, which also gets a V8. There’s also now the BMW XM, a more likely competitor with a sky-high price tag and scorching performance.
