Chevrolet announced updates to the Silverado HD for 2024, so it was only a matter of time before GMC got in on the action. General Motors’ dedicated truck brand gives its Sierra HD a refresh for 2024, bringing new exterior styling, updated tech, and more robust drivetrain options. According to GMC, the new heavy-duty (HD) trucks can tow up to 36,000 pounds when properly equipped and offer up to 975 pound-feet of torque.

GMC offers the new Sierra HD in six trim levels: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate. An off-road-oriented AT4X trim will become available later in the model year.

GMC updates the 2024 Sierra HD with a new front fascia design and a revised bumper. The grille is also new and varies in design based on trim. The new truck also has animated light sequences when approaching, leaving, or starting the vehicle. The SLE, AT4, and Denali trims get new wheel designs and 18-inch polished aluminum wheels for dual-rear-wheel variants. Six new colors are available, and the top Denali and Denali Ultimate trims get new rear wheelhouse liners when equipped with dual rear wheels.
Stepping up to the Denali Ultimate brings the bling. It comes with chrome exterior trim and exclusive Denali Ultimate badges. Gloss-black wheels, power-assisted side steps, and GMC’s excellent MultiPro tailgate come standard.

The light-duty GMC Sierra 1500 recently got a new, more upscale interior, and now it’s the HD trucks’ turn. The SLE and SLT trims get all-new interiors, and GMC says the AT4, Denali, and Denali Ultimate get a boost in the luxury department. All trucks get new color and accent options, and GMC notes using more premium materials to give the trucks a more upscale feel.
The Denali Ultimate gets full-grain leather and open-pore woods. GMC wraps the door panels in full-grain leather and houses the speakers behind etched stainless-steel grilles. Front-seat passengers get 16-way power-adjustable, massaging seats, and the truck comes standard with microsuede accents throughout. Each truck has a power sunroof, rearview camera mirror, and Denali Ultimate badges.
Two engines are available in the 2024 Sierra HD pickup. The base powertrain is a 6.6-liter gas V8 making 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. An available 6.6-liter Duramax diesel brings incredible power and torque, with 470 hp and 975 pound-feet of torque. GMC equips both trucks with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission—a significant upgrade for the base gasoline engine.
The Sierra 3500 HD brings 20,000 pounds of towing and 6,820 pounds of payload when properly equipped; adding a gooseneck hitch bumps that capability to 36,000 pounds for some variants. The trucks have a load of trailering technologies, including a transparent trailer view, blind-spot warning with trailer coverage, and adaptive cruise control with trailering functions. Buyers can upgrade to a 14-angle camera and trailer-length indicator systems.
For 2024, the Sierra HD comes standard with GMC Pro Safety, a suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including:
The Sierra HD trucks also have a Pro Safety Plus package, which brings rear cross-traffic warning with braking and enhanced trailering safety functions.
For 2024, GMC updates the Sierra HD with an available 13.4-inch infotainment system touchscreen. The class-leading display offers text and voice inputs. Buyers can choose to pair it with a 15-inch head-up display in select trims. There’s also an available 12.3-inch configurable digital gauge cluster with views for maps, audio information, and more. GMC’s infotainment interface is easy to use and intuitive, making it less distracting. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are standard, and the new infotainment system offers Google services.
Though it shares a corporate parent, the GMC Sierra HD competes most directly with its cross-brand counterpart, the Chevrolet Silverado HD. Both trucks offer the same powertrains and many of the same tech features, but the GMC is plusher and more luxurious. Ford just updated its HD trucks, making them far more upscale and tech-heavy, and they also offer great work/trailering tech. Finally, we can’t ignore Ram’s HD trucks, as they bring super-plush interiors, fantastic ride quality, and solid capability.
