Like many other significant automakers, General Motors has enjoyed a successful run of several years selling SUVs of all sizes and shapes. The Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Suburban are among the most iconic SUVs ever, and GMC builds several popular sport utility vehicle models, including the Yukon. The Acadia is a popular midsize SUV from GMC, and it’s getting a significant update for 2024, ushering in a new generation.

GMC offers the 2024 Acadia in several configurations, including the off-road-oriented AT4 trim level and plush Denali variant. A turbocharged 4-cylinder engine powers the entire Acadia line for 2024. GMC says its updates to the AT4 trim make it more capable than before. There’s also a new touchscreen, plenty of safety tech, and newly available Super Cruise for the midsize family hauler.

The new Acadia doesn’t look radically different from its predecessor, but its exterior dimensions get a significant boost for the new model year. The SUV is now 10.6 inches longer and 3.2 inches taller than before, which brings notable improvements to its interior space. A one-inch lift and 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires highlight the updated AT4 trim, while the range-topping Denali gets 22-inch wheels and acres of chrome.

GMC says the bump in exterior dimensions equates to much more interior space. There is now 80 percent more cargo space with the third row upright and 36 percent more behind the second row. The AT4 trim gets unique touches, including a “Forest Storm” (kind of green) color scheme, mahogany stitching, and chrome trim pieces. The Denali version gets a panoramic sunroof, laser-etched wood trim, chrome accents, and perforated leather seats. Heated and ventilated first-row seats are available, along with heated second-row seats.
The previous-generation Acadia has two engine choices: a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and a 3.6-liter V6. GMC replaces those options for 2024 with a new turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard, and buyers can choose between front- or all-wheel drive (AWD). Towing capacity with the new engine reaches 5,000 pounds when the SUV is equipped correctly.
GMC revised the somewhat rugged AT4 trim for 2024, and the variant gets torque-vectoring AWD. Unlike the brake-based systems in some AWD vehicles, the AT4 uses a twin-clutch system that provides true torque vectoring. It also rides on a wider track than before and comes with an off-road suspension setup that features improved hydraulic rebound control.
GMC offers a load of standard safety tech in the 2024 Acadia, an improved camera system, and available Super Cruise. Standard tech includes:
As of this writing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2024 GMC Acadia.
GMC equips a portrait-oriented 15-inch touchscreen in every 2024 Acadia, which brings a customizable interface and Google Built-in features. The automaker will include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, and more in the system. The infotainment system pairs with an 11-inch digital gauge cluster. It offers advanced Google-based features, including Maps, Google Assistant, and more. A newly available camera system provides up to nine views, with several exterior angles and a surround-view setting.
The new Acadia needs to be a fantastic SUV to compete with the heavy hitters in its class. Buyers may consider the Hyundai Palisade or Kia Telluride as alternatives—two of the best family vehicles of any type today. There’s also the popular Honda Pilot, the recently redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the updated Toyota Highlander.
