The Chevrolet Traverse is getting a glow-up for 2024 with a new design, better safety tech, and more power. Chevy is also giving it a new Z71 off-road trim and boosting the SUV’s tech street cred. The new Traverse retains its family-hauling capability and improves its towing capacity to 5,000 pounds, thanks to an all-new engine with impressive specs.

Chevy will offer the new 2024 Traverse in four trim levels: LS, LT, Z71, and RS. All will come with a turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and either front-wheel (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Pricing and release date details are forthcoming, but we know that the 2024 Traverse will land early in the year and that production will take place in Michigan.

Earlier Traverse models ranged in appearance from round and frumpy to sharp and aggressive. This new design falls somewhere in between, leaning toward the sharper styling with elements drawn from Chevy’s truck line. The wheels are further out to the corners for a more muscular stance, and each trim gets a slightly different exterior. The LS and LT are available with a Midnight or Sport Edition package, while the LT, Z71, and RS feature a dual-pane glass sunroof. A dual exhaust system comes standard, and the sporty RS trim adds walk-up lighting animation.

Chevy’s never been one to shy away from offering several trim levels, and the Traverse’s interior finishes are just as wide-ranging. The RS gets a unique interior with badges and a 3-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel. Chevy says the new Traverse SUV has best-in-class cargo space of up to 98 cubic feet, and the pass-through center console design provides hidden storage low in the cabin.
The Traverse is also available with a range of seating options, including eight passengers with second- and third-row benches or seven passengers with second-row captain’s chairs. One-touch folding second-row seats and power-folding third-row seats come with the RS trim.
Chevy keeps it simple with the Traverse’s powertrain offering for 2024, with a single turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 315 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers represent a 19-percent increase in torque over the previous engine, and maximum trailering reaches 5,000 pounds. Chevy pairs the engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission and FWD or AWD.
The new Z71 off-road model gets standard AWD and gets a one-inch lift over other trims. It also rides on 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires and utilizes a unique twin-clutch AWD system for better traction off-road. Chevy says it retuned the dampers for better rebound and stability off-road, and the automaker equips a drive-mode selector with five settings.
Chevy equips more standard safety tech for 2024, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, following-distance indicator, lane-keeping assistance, lane-departure warning, high-beam assist, and front pedestrian and bicyclist detection. Several other features are available, including parking sensors, a safety alert seat system, an HD rearview camera, blind-spot warning, and more.
As of this writing, the new Traverse hasn’t seen the business end of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash testing.
The 2024 Traverse gets a massive new infotainment screen that measures 17.7 inches diagonally. Chevy says it’s more than twice as large as the previous model, bringing Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and six USB ports. Chevy offers wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot, but all trims come with OnStar, which includes vehicle diagnostics, app functionality, roadside assistance, and more.
The new Traverse will have to contend with the undisputed heavyweight champion twins in its segment—the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride. Both models received a mid-cycle refresh for 2023, giving their already-fantastic interiors a brush-up and adding new tech. The Honda Pilot is also all-new for 2023, and the Toyota Highlander is a compelling alternative.
