Chevrolet thoroughly refreshed the light-duty Silverado 1500 for 2022 and gave the truck minor updates for 2023. For 2024, Chevy is giving its heavy-duty Silverado HD truck line a massage, adding more power and making the beefy Allison 10-speed automatic transmission standard across the line. Like its “lesser” Silverado 1500 counterpart, Chevy’s HD trucks also get an improved interior with better tech and more comfort features.
Chevy offers the 2024 Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD in five trim levels: Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country. Three cab styles are available, including regular, double (extended), and crew cab configurations. Chevrolet says a new ZR2 variant will become available later in 2024 for the first time.
Chevy gave the 2024 Silverado HD a new front fascia with updated running lights and headlights. The truck’s grille is also new and features different designs for specific trim levels. The headlights now feature a split-beam design that projects a welcome or walkaway lighting sequence for the driver. Tow hooks are now standard, and the hood scoop features a stamped Chevrolet lettered logo.
The Silverado HD is available in regular, double, and crew cab configurations. Several upgrades are available for the bed, including a corner-step rear bumper, Chevy’s excellent Multi-Flex tailgate, power outlets, a power tailgate, steps, and more. Various appearance packages bring chrome, blacked-out exterior trim, and exclusive wheel designs.
Changes to the Silverado HD’s interior help bring it into the modern age. Chevy revised the center stack with a new touchscreen, an updated design that houses physical controls, and a new wireless charging pad. Chevy says it designed the stack with an eye to its trucks from the 1970s and 1980s, where simplicity and driver focus was king.
Other updates include a new cupholder design with more space and new hidden storage spaces throughout the cabin. Chevy offers up to 10 cupholders in the new Silverado HD and adds climate vents with controls for passengers in the second row.
Two engines are available in the 2024 Silverado HD. The base mill is a 6.6-liter gas V8 making 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. The available 6.6-liter Duramax diesel offers the best capability, with 470 hp and 975 pound-feet of torque. Both engines pair with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. When equipped with 2-wheel drive, diesel, and dual rear wheels, the Silverado 3500HD offers up to 6,820 pounds of payload. The same truck can tow up to 20,000 pounds when properly equipped. The gooseneck upgrade for the 3500HD bumps trailering up to 36,000 pounds for select models.
Chevy offers several tech features that make trailering easier, including a transparent trailer app that gives the driver visibility “through” the trailer in the infotainment display. The available trailer side blind-spot warning extends the truck’s visibility to include trailer blind spots, and Chevy updated the adaptive cruise control system to work when towing.
Every 2024 Silverado HD comes with a substantial list of standard tech features. Chevy equips:
Tech and infotainment updates are the most dramatic changes for the 2024 Silverado HD. A new 13.4-inch infotainment screen caps the updated center stack. A 12.3-inch configurable driver information display accompanies it. Chevrolet’s infotainment interface is simple and colorful. Chevy added new camera views and apps to take advantage of the larger display. There are now up to 14 unique camera views, including an in-bed view and a surround-view angle. The infotainment system’s trailering app provides trailer information and helps display the most relevant camera angles.
The Chevrolet Silverado HD has only three direct competitors. The GMC Sierra HD is mechanically similar and offers much of the same feature set but brings a nicer interior and more upscale styling. It generally follows the Silverado’s lead, so we’ll likely see a new Sierra HD soon. Ford’s Super Duty trucks are the Silverado’s biggest threat and are part of the group that comprises the best-selling trucks in America. Finally, Ram’s HD trucks provide posh interiors and all the capabilities of the Chevy and Ford.
