2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Preview

General Motors (GM) has gone further than many automakers with its electrification strategy. With several brands under its umbrella, the Detroit-based auto giant has an opportunity to make a big splash with a series of zero-emissions vehicles that truly wow buyers. Chevrolet, whose portfolio already includes electric vehicles (EVs) such as the Bolt and Bolt EUV, has now hopped on the GM electrification train with a fully electric version of the full-size Silverado pickup truck. The 2024 Silverado EV will launch in spring 2023 with more than 400 miles of range and impressive capability.

At the truck's launch, two trim levels are available: WT and RST. The WT (Work Truck) launches in spring 2023 and is a stripped-down utility vehicle with the black plastic exterior trim and simple finishes commercial buyers expect. The upscale RST trim will launch in fall 2023 and feature sleek exterior styling and luxurious interior features. The RST First Edition will start at $105,000, but Chevy says it will later offer a full line of Silverado trims, with prices starting at $50,000 and expanding from there.

What's New for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV?

  • The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV is an all-new electric pickup and Chevy's first all-electric truck
  • Two trims—WT (Work Truck) and RST—will be available at launch, with other fleet and consumer versions coming later
  • The Silverado EV offers 400-plus miles of range, 10,000 pounds of max. towing, and up to 10.2 kW of offboard power (with options)
  • Crew cab is the only available body style
  • The WT will start at around $40,000 when launched in spring 2023
  • The RST launches in fall 2023; First Edition models will start at $105,000, but subsequent trucks will start at around $50,000

The crew cab-only Silverado EV's beefy C-pillars make it difficult not to draw comparisons to the Avalanche, a long-defunct pickup based on the Suburban SUV. The WT trim features prominent black plastic body cladding and steel wheels. As is the case with lower trims of Chevy's gas-powered pickups, the WT gets plastic door handles, trim, mirrors, and bumpers as well.

The Silverado EV RST is much more consumer-ready, and features gloss black exterior trim, available 24-inch wheels, and a unique LED light bar where the grille would traditionally be. Chevy equips the trucks with adaptive air suspension that can provide up to a 2-inch lift or drop, depending on the situation. The available Multi-Flex tailgate opens in a variety of configurations to provide better cargo hauling and entry/exit functions. The big news is that the RST also comes with a Multi-Flex Midgate, which opens between the bed and cabin to provide long item carrying capabilities. According to Chevrolet, the feature does not interfere with back-seat function and provides over nine feet of storage when in use.

Unlike traditional gas-powered trucks, Chevy could approach designing the Silverado EV without constraints associated with drivetrain components. This enabled the automaker to place a heavy emphasis on storage and flexibility with the new Silverado EV. To that end, both the RST and WT trims offer customizable storage space in the front row and a modular center console with over seven gallons of storage.

Since the truck comes only in the crew cab body style, there's a full-size back seat that Chevy says can easily accommodate adults over six feet tall.

The upscale RST trim comes standard with a fixed-glass panoramic roof that expands headroom. Both trucks feature 60/40 split-folding rear seats for better in-cab cargo-hauling while preserving a seat for an additional passenger in the back.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Specs

The Silverado EV rides on GM's Ultium platform, which also underpins the new GMC Hummer EV. The architecture includes a 24-module Ultium battery pack built into the structure. Both the WT and RST come standard with 510 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque, but the RST offers a "Wide Open Watts" (WOW) mode that bumps output to 664 hp and more than 780 pound-feet of torque, which enables an estimated zero-to-60 mph time of under 4.5 seconds. The Silverado EV also gets 4-wheel steering, drastically improving its turning radius and making maneuvering tight urban areas much more manageable.

Towing and payload capabilities are strong, at 8,000 pounds towing and 1,200 pounds payload for the base WT trim. The RST can pull up to 10,000 pounds and carry 1,300 pounds of cargo when properly equipped. Though the WT will be the first Silverado EV launched for fleet duty, Chevy says a later model will offer up to 20,000 pounds of max trailering. Range numbers for the trucks are estimated to crest the 400-mile mark. The Silverado EV can use DC fast-charging stations with up to 350 kW, which GM estimates can replenish up to 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

As with other EVs, including the upcoming Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck, the Silverado EV offers power outlet functionality. The truck's PowerBase charging system provides up to 10 power outlets and a total of 10.2 kW of power. The system can also charge another EV using an accessory charging cord.

Chevy offers access to GM's Ultium Charge 360 for RST owners to keep them rolling with their new electric trucks, which provides access to more than 100,000 charging stations in the United States and Canada. WT owners get Ultium Charge 360 Fleet Service, which includes telematics and charging assistance for the truck, whether parked at a central location or taken to an employee's home.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Safety

Chevy hasn't outlined the new Silverado EV's complete safety systems yet, but it has shared some important details. The RST will offer GM's Super Cruise functionality with a new trailering function. The hands-free driving-assistance function works like an advanced adaptive cruise control system on limited-access highways and other roads. With trailering functionality, Super Cruise can reduce fatigue when towing long distances and allows lane changes and other capabilities. The Silverado EV RST also offers a 14-inch full-color head-up display.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Technology

Though it was behind rivals Ford and Ram for years on truck tech, Chevrolet took a giant leap forward in 2022 with new infotainment and upgraded hardware in its gas trucks. The Silverado EV pushes the envelope further for Chevy with a Linux-based interface that offers rapid and frequent software updates and the ability for owners to be more intimately involved with their truck's functionality and data.

The RST trim comes with an enormous 17-inch LCD infotainment display, a 14-inch full-color head-up display, and an 11-inch configurable gauge cluster. The driver can use their phone as a key fob; approaching the truck with either the key or a connected smartphone prompts a unique welcome lighting animation. The hands-free start system turns on the truck automatically when the key or phone is detected.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV Competitors

When it arrives in 2023, the Chevy Silverado EV will face off against a growing electric truck market that includes the Ford F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV, and Rivian R1T.
