BMW’s SUV lineup is expansive, covering several vehicle segments and fuel types. The more entry-level models offer surprising affordability and value, and the next-to-smallest X2 is getting an update for 2024 with more tech and improved performance. BMW also gave it more space and a more imposing curb presence with a larger exterior.

BMW offers the new X2 in two main configurations: the entry-level X2 xDrive28i and the performance-oriented X2 M35i xDrive. The popular SUV will debut at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo in late October 2023 and go on sale in March 2024.

The X2 is BMW’s second-smallest crossover SUV, but it’s getting bigger for 2024. It’s 7.6 inches longer, 0.8 inches wider, and 2.5 inches taller than the outgoing model. BMW says the changes give the X2 stretched proportions and a more athletic stance. It has a reshaped kidney grille and a long, unbroken roofline. The crossover has a more upright front end and updated headlights that help set it apart from the smaller, less expensive X1.
The available M Sport package for the xDrive28i model brings larger side air intakes, M side skirts, dark exterior trim, and an M diffuser. It also adds adaptive M suspension and 19-inch M wheels; buyers can upgrade with 20- or 21-inch units.

The new X2’s interior brings high-end materials and increased legroom thanks to its larger exterior dimensions. The front seats feature a raised seating position, and BMW oriented all controls and displays toward the driver. A new center console houses the gear selector lever and a control panel with the start/stop button, volume control, and more.
BMW equips a new seat design that it says offers better lateral support and long-term comfort than previous versions and notes that the improvements have made it to the optional sport seats. Animal-free leather upholstery is standard, and buyers can choose from six interior color themes. The M Sport package adds black with blue contrast stitching and Alcantara. M models also get aluminum interior trim, an Alcantara-trimmed gauge cluster, M trim on the door sills, and M graphics throughout.
The new X2 xDrive28i has a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a revised dual injection and an updated combustion system. It makes 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque and sends it to the front or all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Meanwhile, X2 M35i buyers get the same engine with performance upgrades that boost output to 312 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque. According to BMW, the increase is good for a zero-to-60-mph time of 5.2 seconds, down from the standard powertrain’s 6.2-second run.
The X2 M35i comes standard with adaptive M suspension, and the entry-level xDrive28i model is available with the tech. According to the automaker, it works with the electric power steering system to provide more responsive handling and direct turn-in. BMW also equips a new near-actuator wheel-slip limitation system that it says improves traction and handling on slippery surfaces.
BMW equips a range of driver aids on the new X2, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, intersection turn assistance, blind-spot warning, a safe-exit system, and more. BMW also offers its Driving Assistance Professional package for the first time in the X2, bringing limited hands-free driving and other protections.
The new X2 has two large displays mounted behind a single glass panel. There’s a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen running BMW iDrive 9. Updates with the new interface include more robust and customizable connected services, configurable graphics, and a new flat menu design that reduces the number of taps needed to accomplish simple tasks. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, and BMW says it will issue over-the-air software updates to add new features and improve existing functionality.
BMW earned more than its fair share of heat when it announced subscription services for popular vehicle functions like heated seats. The automaker might walk some of that back after public blowback, but there are still plenty of added-cost features available. Buyers can add BMW Digital Premium, which brings music, video, news, and gaming streaming. Owners can play games while the vehicle is stationary, using a smartphone as the controller.
The BMW X2 competes against several small luxury SUVs, including the Audi Q3 and Jaguar E-Pace. Mercedes makes a natural competitor in the GLA, which is available in a high-performance AMG model. The Volvo XC40 is another solid alternative, though it’s configured much more for comfort than performance.
