Ram used the 2022 State Fair of Texas to show off its new 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel, a beefy off-road truck that retains its work-truck capabilities. Ram positioned the new heavy-duty (HD) Rebel between the Laramie and Power Wagon trim levels. It brings hardcore off-road upgrades such as an electronic-locking rear differential and a rear limited-slip differential. Ram installed skid plates underneath to protect sensitive components from rocks and heavy terrain, and an optional 12,000-pound Warn winch can help dig the truck out of the mud.
The standard engine in the 2023 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Rebel is a 6.4-liter Hemi gas V8, but the automaker offers a 6.7-liter Cummins diesel with almost double the torque. Output for the gas engine lands at 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, while the diesel delivers 370 hp and 850 pound-feet. Ram says the Rebel can tow 16,870 pounds and haul 3,140 pounds when properly equipped.
Ram used a 5-link coil design with available rear air suspension in the new Rebel. The automaker says that the air system helps level heavy loads and can significantly improve ride quality, especially when the truck is unladen. Similar setups have worked wonders in the smaller Ram 1500, so the rear air suspension should make a noticeable difference here.
The Rebel's styling follows the Power Wagon's look. The truck is available with a crew cab and a 6-foot, 4-inch bed. It gets 20-inch wheels, a muscular hood, and unique graphics and badging. Buyers can upgrade with a spray-in bed liner, LED lighting, and a bed step system. Ram offers three interior configurations for the Rebel: cloth front bucket or bench seats, Bristol leather upholstery, or Natura Plus leather upholstery.
On the tech front, the Rebel comes standard with a 360-degree surround-view camera system. Ram's Power Wagon comes standard with an 8.4-inch touchscreen that buyers can upgrade with a 12-inch unit, so the same will likely be true for the Rebel. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, and voice recognition are some of the standard features offered by the Uconnect 5-powered touchscreen.
Ram offers a host of safety equipment on the new Rebel, but most of it is optional. Available tech includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning, a rearview camera mirror, lane-keeping assistance, rear cross-traffic warning, and towing modes.
The 2022 Ram HD trucks are on sale now, but the automaker says its 2023 product line will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2022. The Ram 2500 HD Rebel starts at $68,940, including the $1,895 destination fee. The Ram 2500 HD Rebel's main competitors include the Ford F-250 Tremor and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD with the Z71 package.
