2023 Ford Maverick Tremor Preview

Chris Teague | Aug 02, 2022

Ford had a breakout hit on its hands with the release of the Maverick compact pickup truck for the 2022 model year. The automaker received so many orders and saw such strong demand that it had to close order books to take a breather. As the order banks reopen for the 2023 model year, Ford announced the Maverick Tremor, an entry-level truck with light off-road trimmings and upgraded suspension.

It's worth noting that the truck was already available with Ford's FX4 off-road package, which adds unique wheels, all-terrain tires, and upgraded engine cooling. The Tremor package builds on that base with a new all-wheel-drive system that uses a twin-clutch rear drive unit and a differential lock. Ford says the truck can shift all rear torque to either of the rear wheels and notes that it comes with five selectable drive modes for conditions such as sand, dirt, snow, and mud.

Though Ford offers the base Maverick with a hybrid powertrain, the Tremor comes with the mid-range XLT trim and a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. A one-inch lift improves ground clearance, as well as the truck's approach and departure angles. Upgraded half-shafts and a heavy-duty transmission cooler help keep everything running smoothly. The Maverick Tremor also gets Ford's Trail Control system, which acts as off-road cruise control. The package does not improve on the Maverick's towing and payload ratings, which remain at 2,000 and 1,200 pounds, respectively.

The Maverick Tremor gets several design touches to help it stand out from the standard truck. It comes with a unique grille and blacked-out badging. The front tow hooks feature the signature Tremor orange color, and Ford says an available appearance package adds a gray roof, painted mirror caps, and a black graphics package. The truck rides on 17-inch wheels with orange accents, and Ford installs skid plates underneath for protection off-road.

Inside, the Maverick Tremor gets black upholstery with stitched logos and orange accents. The orange also flows into the dash and door panels, where the vents and handles feature the accent color. The Tremor will get standard tech features from the classic Maverick, which include an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 4.2-inch gauge cluster information screen, and Ford's Sync 3 infotainment software.
