  • The third-generation 2022 Toyota Tundra is all-new
  • Two twin-turbo V6 engines are available, one with a hybrid system
  • Up to 1,910 pounds of payload capacity

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is an all-new full-size pickup that marks the truck’s first complete redesign in well over a decade. The second-generation Tundra was sold, mostly unchanged, for 14 years, and was showing its age in the face of more advanced trucks from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, and Ram.

Toyota offers the 2022 Tundra with three bed lengths and in either double cab or CrewMax cab configurations. Six trims are available: SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1794, and TRD Pro. The V8 engine is gone. Instead, two V6 engines are available, and both are twin-turbocharged. The optional V6 even includes hybrid power for the first time in a Tundra. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and 4-wheel drive is available.

With TRD Pro trim, large TOYOTA lettering replaces the company’s badge, and the grille includes an embedded light bar. Viewed from the side, bulging fender flares, blacked out windshield pillars, and kinked rear door glass make the Tundra look longer and lower than it is, while the rear features new “C”-shaped taillights.

The new 2022 Tundra’s bed features reinforced aluminum cross members and a new sheet molded compound material that can resist dents and damage more effectively than steel. The tailgate has a lightweight design that reduces weight by 20% and features a standard remote-opening function via the truck’s key fob.

Most trims now feature soft-touch interior surfaces, and new options are available, including digital instrumentation, a panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a rear sunshade, and a heated steering wheel.

With the 2022 Tundra, Toyota drops the powerful and resonant but thirsty 5.7-liter V8 engine in favor of a pair of twin-turbocharged V6 engines.

A twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 is standard, rated to deliver 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, which is more than the outgoing V8 could supply.

The optional engine is also a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, offering additional power and torque from a bell housing-mounted electric motor-generator. The combined output for the new Tundra Hybrid is 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, the latter available at just 2,400 rpm. At low speeds, such as when stuck in heavy traffic, the Tundra Hybrid can run solely on electric power in its EV mode.

Both engines pair with a new 10-speed automatic transmission that features a sequential shifting mode, tow/haul driving modes, and special shift programming for uphill and downhill driving. Sport and Sport+ driving modes are also available.

Tundras with 4WD and either the TRD Off-Road package or TRD Pro specification come with several systems designed to improve capability in the dirt. Multi-terrain Select offers unique traction control modes for specific situations, while Crawl Control works as an off-road cruise control system to regulate speed while the driver concentrates on choosing the best path forward. Downhill Assist Control limits the truck’s speed on steep descents.

A new double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension system with coil springs improves ride quality, handling, and stability, according to Toyota. Additionally, Toyota offers a new adaptive damping suspension on the 2022 Tundra, further improving the ride and handling, and an available air suspension ensures proper load leveling.

Naturally, the 2022 TRD Pro upgrades include Fox internal bypass shocks, an upgraded front stabilizer bar, underbody skid plates, and a 1.1-inch front suspension lift. This off-road-ready version of the Tundra rides on all-terrain tires.

The new Tundra also boasts an increase in towing capacity and payload, now capable of towing up to 12,000 pounds and hauling a maximum payload of up to 1,940 pounds.

Safety Systems - Find the best Toyota deals!

Every 2022 Toyota Tundra comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. This is the company’s collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS), and it includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assistance
  • Lane-centering assistance
  • Intersection turn assistance
  • Evasive steering assistance
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Road-sign recognition
  • Rear-seat reminder system

The new Tundra also comes standard with blind-spot warning with trailer coverage and rear cross-traffic warning, making the new Tundra one of the most well-equipped trucks on the market from a safety equipment standpoint.

Infotainment and Technology - Find the best Toyota deals!

Toyota introduces new infotainment software in the 2022 Tundra. Calling it the Audio Multimedia system, the new Tundra’s infotainment technology offers five times the processing power and features an entirely new interface with revised menus and control options as well as natural voice recognition. Over-the-air updates keep the technology up to date over time.

In the Tundra, the Audio Multimedia system will use either a standard 8-inch touchscreen or an optional 14-inch touchscreen. Tundra hybrid models and top trims come standard with the larger display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also on board, as well as numerous Toyota Connected Services plans. Jumbo dials and controls similar to those in the previous truck continue, which allow the driver to easily interact with the tech while wearing gloves.

User profiles allow drivers to configure the truck for their preferred settings. Media and climate settings are stored in the cloud, which will enable drivers to take their personalized options to other Toyota vehicles that offer the new multimedia system.

Toyota also introduces a multitude of cameras on the new Tundra. They assist with parking, towing, cargo hauling, and off-roading, with views accessible on the new infotainment system’s screen.

Additionally, new Trailer Back Guidance and Straight Path Assist technologies debut. Toyota says they make it easier for drivers to reverse when a trailer is attached.

2022 Toyota Tundra Competitors - Find the best Toyota deals!

The new 2022 Tundra looks to improve on the old truck in every measurable way, which should make it more competitive with other light-duty pickups. Rivals include the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, GMC Sierra, Nissan Titan, and Ram 1500
