Several years ago, Volvo announced its plans to transform itself into an electric vehicle (EV) company by 2030. The automaker has since adjusted that timeframe, better aligning its ambitions with changing market forces. However, it has not prevented the company from introducing its most capable EV yet: the 2027 Volvo EX60.

Expected in U.S. showrooms by the end of the summer of 2026, the 2027 EX60 is a midsize, two-row electric SUV offering up to 400 miles of range for around $60,000. Fast charging capability makes the EX60 an agreeable road-tripper, and it introduces a new Superset tech stack powering the interior displays, infotainment system, and driving-assistance technologies.
For the 2028 model year, a Cross Country version will join the lineup, offering a more rugged appearance and a lifted suspension.
- A midsize electric SUV with seating for five
- New EV architecture and propulsion systems
- Traditional Scandinavian design, inside and out
- Up to 400 miles of range, and recharging in less than 20 minutes
- Holds up to 64.3 cubic feet of cargo and tows up to 4,500 pounds
- A new Superset tech stack powers interior displays and driving-assistance systems
- The Volvo EX60 release date is late summer of 2026
- Volvo says a well-equipped EX60 will cost about $60,000

Scandinavian designs are typically minimalist, but the new Volvo EX60 takes it to the next level with a nearly unadorned exterior shaped to cheat the wind. Volvo will offer the EX60 in Core, Plus, and Ultra trim levels, with your choice of eight exterior paint colors. Additionally, Bright and Dark themes are available to further customize the EV's appearance, as well as a selection of wheel designs in sizes ranging from 20 to 22 inches.
When the Cross Country version goes on sale, it will feature more rugged styling, stainless-steel front and rear skid plate protection on the lower fascias, a wider track, a subtle suspension lift, and unique wheels. Additionally, an exclusive Frost Green paint color will be available for the EX60 Cross Country.

Inside, the new EX60 is similarly Scandinavian in appearance. Volvo equips the EV with a new 15-inch center touchscreen in a landscape orientation, paired with an 11.4-inch digital driver display.
Natural color schemes and materials are evident throughout, bathed in light entering through a panoramic sunroof with available electrochromic opacity adjustment. Several ambient lighting themes are available, including Forest Light, which simulates sunlight filtering through tree branches, very zen.
Volvo's Nordico artificial leather upholstery is standard. You can upgrade with genuine Nappa leather or a wool blend fabric, and ash wood trim decorates the dashboard. Ventilated front seats are available, and the rear seats offer optional integrated child booster seats.
Storage space abounds in the EX60. The maximum cargo space is generous, too, measuring 64.3 cubic feet. Beneath the trunk load floor, the EX60 has a hidden storage compartment. Under the hood, a front trunk (frunk) is available for smaller items.

Volvo offers three electric propulsion systems for the new EX60. The P6 Electric is a single motor setup equipped with an 83-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, delivering 369 horsepower to the rear wheels. The P10 AWD Electric has a dual motor system and a 95-kWh battery, and supplies 503 hp. The P12 AWD Electric dual motor includes a 117-kWh battery and delivers 670 hp.
The P12 Electric offers the most power, the largest battery, the quickest acceleration (zero-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds), and the longest driving range (400 miles). But when Volvo announces prices for the entire EX60 lineup, it will likely be the most expensive. If you can live without as much outright speed and a driving range measuring between 310 and 320 miles, the P6 Electric and P10 AWD Electric will likely prove friendlier to your budget.
Every EX60 has 800-volt technology for rapid DC fast charging. Find a 400-kilowatt (kW) station, and Volvo says you can recharge the P10 or P12 from 10 to 80 percent in 18-19 minutes. The P6 Electric is compatible with 350-kW stations, but still reaches 80 percent in 18 minutes. Every EX60 has a North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge port, making this Volvo compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network.

With the 2026 EX60, Volvo introduces its new Superset tech stack that it plans to install in all its future EV models. The hardware and software in the Superset translate into the 11.4-inch high-resolution digital driver display, the 15-inch OLED touchscreen infotainment system, and new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as hands-free Navi Pilot Assist.
The infotainment system features Google Maps, Google Play, and an integrated version of Apple Music with Dolby Atmos technology. Google Gemini AI (artificial intelligence) powers the digital voice assistant. A sophisticated 21-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system is standard, but audiophiles will want the optional 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins hi-fidelity sound system.
Volvo's new Navi Pilot Assist is a hands-free version of its existing Pilot Assist hands-on highway driving-assistance system. It pairs the adaptive cruise control with lane centering assistance and adds a new hands-free function.
Additionally, the EX60 introduces a new multi-adaptive seat belt design that Volvo claims will adapt to the size, body shape, and seating position of the driver and front passenger. It can even assess the Volvo's speed and direction at the time of the crash to better ensure safety.
Other innovations include a sophisticated new driver monitoring system, which Volvo calls the Driver Understanding System. An occupant-detection system is sensitive enough to detect a breathing baby, and Volvo says it has engineered the EX60 electronic door latches with redundant power sources and an internal mechanical release to ensure a speedy exit when necessary.
When the 2027 Volvo EX60 goes on sale at the end of the summer of 2026, it will face the equally impressive new 2027 BMW iX3. Other rivals in the electric luxury SUV segment include upcoming and existing alternatives such as the Acura RSX, Audi Q6 E-tron, Cadillac Lyriq, Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology, Porsche Macan Electric, Rivian R2, and Tesla Model Y.
