Ford continues to tweak the popular 2021 Ford Explorer lineup to draw more midsize SUV shoppers to the model. Mid-year changes include lower-priced Explorer ST performance and Explorer Platinum luxury models, and a new Platinum Hybrid model.
These updates are in addition to changes announced earlier in the model year. Last summer, Ford announced a new XLT Sport Appearance Package for the 2021 Explorer. It pairs a gray grille and gray 20-inch wheels with interior tweaks such as Slate-colored two-tone seats with accent stitching.
Even more recently, Ford unveiled the 2021 Ford Explorer King Ranch, a western-themed luxury version of the SUV blending King Ranch design elements with the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine from the Explorer Platinum.
The most recent changes to the Ford Explorer lineup are apparent attempts to add value in a competitive segment.
The Enthusiast ST becomes the most affordable version of the performance-tuned Explorer, offering the exterior style, high-horsepower engine, and mechanical tuning but at a lower price of $48,750. That shaves $4,080 off of the ST’s previous starting price of $52,830. The prices do not include the $1,295 destination charge.
The new Enthusiast ST trim has the same turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine as the standard ST. It produces 400 horsepower and 415 lb.-ft. of torque, and Ford says the Enthusiast ST has a top speed of 143 mph. With the Class III trailering package, it can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Inside, the Explorer Enthusiast ST offers perforated leather seats, silver accent stitching, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. But this version of the SUV is not as well equipped as the standard Explorer ST.
Other additions to the Explorer lineup include a new rear-wheel-drive Platinum trim and a Platinum Hybrid model.
Previously the Platinum trim came only with 4-wheel-drive. The new rear-drive version, priced at $52,480 plus the destination charge, saves luxury seekers $2,000. The Platinum Hybrid ($53,085) promises 25 mpg to 27 mpg in combined driving, with the optional 4WD system returning lower mileage.
The 2021 Ford Explorer Enthusiast ST, rear-wheel-drive Platinum, and Platinum Hybrid are available for ordering now. They should arrive at Ford dealers this summer.
