Volkswagen’s smallest crossover, the Taos, which combines the car-like qualities of the Golf with the utility of the Tiguan compact SUV, is receiving its first significant update since entering the crowded small crossover segment in 2022. The automaker hopes the subtle refresh, which features new technology and an improved powertrain, will continue its strong sales success when the new model arrives at dealerships later in 2024.

As before, Volkswagen will sell the Taos in four trim levels with the choice of front-wheel (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), but there’s a catch. Previously, AWD models linked the turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a sometimes clunky seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). However, VW has decided to offer the DCT no longer and use a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission on all 2025 Taos SUVs.
One of the 2025 Taos trims is the high-grade SE Black, which gets black wheels and exterior trim (black wheels are also available on the SE and SEL). Look at the top SEL trim if you want all the tech and features, including the largest touchscreen.

For the 2025 model year, the Taos gets design themes trickling throughout the VW lineup. That includes an integrated light bar up front (only on higher-end trims), numerous wheel choices, and a vibrant new green color. LED headlights are also standard, and the taillights connect to form a lightbar—another automotive trend.

The 2025 VW Taos interior looks like designers took a photo editor’s sharpening tool and tweaked it ever so slightly. An 8-inch display is standard on all trims, and each has a unique interior. The SEL has blue leather, for example.

Volkswagen also tweaked the Taos’ engine. The turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder in the 2025 model makes 174 horsepower compared to the outgoing model’s 158 hp. It has new fuel injectors and a larger intercooler, among other upgrades. Buyers can choose from either FWD or AWD on all trims; each one gets an eight-speed automatic instead of the seven-speed DCT that came on previous AWD versions of the Taos.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive suite of ADAS is standard on all trims and includes things like blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assistance. Additionally, active parking assistance is now available on the entry SE trim.
The subcompact crossover market is getting more exciting with the introduction of new models like the Buick Envista and the significantly updated Chevrolet Trax. Volkswagen's new Taos appears to have everything buyers are looking for in a small crossover, including large touchscreens, standard safety tech, and modern styling. However, we must wait for the Environmental Protection Agency's official estimates to see how fuel economy compares.
