An all-new electric sedan with sleek styling and an advanced high-tech interior, the 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 is the latest fully electric model from the German automaker.
When it arrives in 2024, the all-new 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 will take its place as the brand’s electric flagship. This large fastback-styled sedan will be the first model in the Volkswagen ID. lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) powered by the automaker’s new in-house, 282-horsepower electric motor driving the rear wheels with an expected range of around 300 miles.
The new ID.7 is a sleek 4-door sedan with a long wheelbase and short overhangs. With a closed front end, steeply raked windshield, and a coupe-like silhouette, the ID.7 has an elegant presence and achieves a slippery 0.23 drag coefficient.
The ID.7 features a low, wide stance with large, contoured side air intakes, slim LED headlights, and a narrow LED strip that connects the headlights and bisects the large, lighted VW logo. A similar LED strip adorns the rear for a unique appearance at night.
With its long wheelbase, the ID.7 is quite spacious, providing excellent room for front and rear-seat passengers. Front seats are stylish with available 14-way power adjustment, and a newly designed massage function utilizes 10 air cushions built into the seatback and two cushions in the seat bottom. In my short time sitting in the ID.7, I found this to be one of the better massaging seats on the market.
Heating and ventilation functions are also available with an automatic mode that activates based on sensors in the seat measuring temperature and moisture.
The rear seat is very spacious, with good headroom and legroom. I found plenty of room even with the front seat moved to its full rearward position. With good padding and support, the rear seats work well for two, but three adults are a tight fit.
The centerpiece of the cabin is the new 15-inch touchscreen display. There are no physical buttons anywhere in the cabin. Climate control and massage functions remain static at the bottom of the display and operate via soft-touch controls below the screen. There is no haptic feedback to these controls, making them somewhat problematic to use while driving.
Adding to the ID.7’s clean design, the gear selector is on the steering column. This positioning frees up the center console, which offers considerable storage space in the covered armrest console, multiple cupholders, and storage space for a larger bag underneath.
The ID.7’s cabin features ambient lighting with up to 10 colors from which to choose that also provide lighted patterns on the dashboard and doors, adding to the high-tech vibe.
One of the standout features of the new ID.7 is the panoramic sunroof with smart glass. Built with a layer of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), the roof swaps between transparent and opaque via a touch control or voice assistant. The glass also reflects infrared radiation, which helps keep the cabin cool if the vehicle has been sitting in the sun.
The ID.7 will be the first all-electric Volkswagen powered by a drivetrain developed in-house by the car company. This new motor produces 282 hp and 401 pound-feet of torque, making it more powerful than any other Volkswagen ID. model (previous ID. models have 201-hp motors).
The ID.7 is rear-wheel drive with the motor integrated into the rear axle with a 2-stage, one-speed gearbox. The single-motor powertrain is the only option confirmed by Volkswagen for launch. Still, Volkswagen reps pointed out that it designed the MEB platform, which is the basis of all current Volkswagen EVs, to handle one or two motors. Customers in North America will likely eventually get an all-wheel-drive, dual-motor ID.7.
Volkswagen will offer the ID.7 with two battery options in Europe: a 77-kWh battery in the ID.7 Pro and a larger 86-kWh variant in the ID.7 Pro S. The automaker’s current plan is to only sell the smaller battery pack in the American-spec ID.7, which it expects to deliver a range of around 300 miles. According to VW, the lithium-ion battery pack resides in the floor of the MEB platform and will have a charge rate of 170 kW.
As the newest model in the Volkswagen lineup, the ID.7 will feature the latest advanced driver assist features, including systems like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
Volkswagen will offer the ID.7 with Travel Assist in select markets, providing highway-assisted driving with lane changing. However, this is not a hands-free system. A hand must remain on the steering wheel for it to function.
The large, 15-inch infotainment display will be standard in the ID.7 and uses a new menu structure for more intuitive use. During my brief time with the new system, it was easy to navigate and responded quickly to my inputs.
The driver display is also new. Instead of a conventional presentation, the ID.7 presents the information in front of the driver in a simple fashion. The small integrated screen shows speed, range, the status of driver-assist systems, and alerts. However, the driver also gets a standard augmented-reality head-up display that provides all other important information, like navigation instructions or communications status.
Another innovation in this new ID.7 is the smart air vents that open and close automatically to create draft-free ventilation. Airflow direction is adjustable via electrically controlled vents, designed to better distribute air through the entire cabin quickly. For added comfort, cooling or heating starts automatically when the driver approaches the vehicle.
Production of the ID.7 will take place at Volkswagen’s Emden plant in Germany, with deliveries beginning for China and Europe later in 2023 and in North America in 2024. The 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 will be one of the few large, premium electric sedans available when it comes to market. While pricing is currently unavailable, the ID.7’s closest competitors will likely be the upcoming BMW i5, Genesis Electrified G80, and Mercedes-Benz EQE.
