Like most major automakers, Mercedes has heavily emphasized its SUV lineup. The mid-range GLE offers luxury and a surprising level of off-road capability. It gets a few notable updates for 2024 that include a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, improved off-road tech, and a refreshed infotainment interface.
Mercedes offers the updated GLE in four configurations, including the entry-level GLE 350, the V6-powered GLE 450, the V8-powered GLE 580, and the GLE 400e PHEV. Though the new plug-in model makes headlines, all other GLE powertrains feature electrification via a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.
Mercedes updates the 2024 GLE’s exterior with a new bumper and a reshaped grille. The radiator grille and outer air intakes get chrome accents, and the new optional LED headlights bring exclusive four-point daytime running lights. Mercedes offers an ambient exterior lighting feature that projects an animated logo onto the ground.
Most models are available with the AMG Line package, but it’s standard for the GLE 580. The option group includes a diamond grille, an exclusive AMG front fascia, AMG side sill panels, and a unique rear fascia. New wheel designs come in 19- and 20-inch sizes and buyers can upgrade the AMG Line package with 21-inch wheels.
The 2024 GLE borrows interior elements from the ultra-posh Mercedes-Maybach GLS and the flagship S-Class sedan. Chrome air vent finishes and the Mercedes Manufaktur piano black trim came from the GLS, while the updated ambient lighting system offers the same color schemes as the S-Class. The SUV gets a new steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, and two new interior upholstery colors are available, including beige/black and brown/black.
All three of the new GLE’s gas powertrains come with mild-hybrid assist. The base GLE 350 gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The GLE 450 gets a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder with 375 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque, and the GLE 580 gets a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 making 510 hp and 538 pound-feet of torque.
The new GLE 400e gets a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gas engine and a plug-in hybrid system that combine for 381 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque. According to Mercedes, it’s capable of a 5.8-second zero-to-60-mph time, but the automaker hasn’t disclosed an all-electric driving range. That said, it comes with an Off-Road drive mode that enables all-electric driving off the pavement.
The previous GLE’s standard safety equipment carries over, which includes blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and forward-collision warning. The 2022 GLE was the last model to receive complete crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), where it received the highest-possible Good scores in all crashworthiness tests. The 2022 GLE also earned a Top Safety Pick + designation—the Institute’s highest accolade. The new 2024 GLE is structurally similar and offers the same equipment.
Mercedes offers a new Off-road Engineering package for the GLE 580 that takes data from the vehicle’s position and movement sensors to create a visual representation in the infotainment system. The GLE’s available 360-degree camera system enables a full view of the terrain around the SUV and enables a “transparent hood” display that shows a view of what’s happening under the front end.
The GLE’s navigation system gets a new Trailer Route Planner system that provides optimized route guidance when the vehicle tows a predefined trailer. The feature accounts for height and weight restrictions along the way, based on trailer specs the driver enters into the infotainment system. The available Trailer Maneuvering Assist function takes advantage of the GLE’s cameras to provide semi-automated movement assistance at low speeds.
Mercedes also updates the MBUX infotainment system with improved voice controls. The “Hey, Mercedes” function works with more vehicle functions, including interior lighting and window shades.
The GLE competes against a wide range of SUVs, from sub-luxury to the who’s-who of the premium world. Buyers may consider the Audi Q7, which offers an opulent interior and engaging driving dynamics. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee’s luxury ascension has made it a worthy competitor, and the redesigned Lexus RX brings striking style and tech. Family buyers may want to look at the Volvo XC90, which brings kid- and parent-friendly features and a gorgeous design. And, of course, there’s always the BMW X5.
