The Mercedes-Benz E-Class practically defines the midsize luxury sedan segment alongside the BMW 5 Series. Now, the Benz is getting a complete overhaul for the 2024 model year. The new car represents a step toward electrification, with Mercedes EQ-like styling, a fully updated infotainment system with giant screens, and more interior space. Mercedes also gave the car a powerful new computing system that relies more on software than hardware and combines all processing into one unit, which the automaker says speeds up tech functions and allows the installation of third-party apps, such as Webex and Zoom.

Mercedes offers the new E-Class with two mild-hybrid powertrains, including the E 350 with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and the E 450 with a turbocharged inline-6. However, much of the oxygen used to talk about this car focuses on its impressive, futuristic tech and significantly improved interior. There’s also an emphasis on owner wellness with the new E-Class, with adaptive seats and unique tech features that reduce driver fatigue and enhance comfort.

Mercedes gives the new E-Class a fresh face for 2024, which includes a black panel built into the grille. The feature is a nod to Mercedes’ EQ electric vehicles and comes with an illuminated LED strip. LED headlights are standard, and a digital light feature offers projection functions. Mercedes says the car features a “cab-backward” design, giving it a sporty look. Flush door handles come standard.
The 2024 E-Class gets an extended wheelbase, which measures 0.87 inches longer than before, and wheel sizes range up to 21 inches. A new LED taillight design features the Mercedes star pattern, and the light units connect in the middle of the rear end.

The increase in wheelbase length affords more interior space, with a 0.2-inch increase in headroom, a 0.4-inch increase in knee room, and a 0.6-inch increase in legroom. Mercedes reimagined the center console, making it a single piece that flows into the lower portion of the dash. Though the automaker moved most functions to the insanely large display screen, it retained a row of physical buttons underneath, and the seat controls remain door-mounted.
Mercedes offers a variety of interior color combinations in the new E-Class, including light beige and grey, dark brown, and black. Open-pore wood trim is available, and buyers can outfit the car with the Manufaktur piano black package from the S-Class. The interior of the 2024 E-Class gets numerous recycled and sustainably produced materials, such as the foam in the seats. Car-seat anchors are under the rear outboard seat cushions. Mercedes says the design allows quick installation with upper tethers on the back shelf.
Mercedes offers the 2024 E-Class in two configurations. The base E 350 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The pricier E 450 has a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 375 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque. A 9-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive come standard. Both engines come with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system employing an electric motor making 22 hp and a whopping 148 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes says the setup lets the car glide without combustion power, and the electric motor replaces the traditional starter, so the car starts more quickly than with the older components.
Adaptive air suspension is available on the new E-Class, offering an automatic leveling feature and an auto-ride height system that can lower the car by 0.6 inches at highway speeds. Rear-axle steering is also available, and the rear wheels can turn up to 4.5 degrees, reducing the turning circle from 39.4 feet to 36.5. Below 37 mph, the wheels turn opposite the fronts, and at higher speeds, they turn up to 2.5 degrees in the same direction.
Mercedes updated the E-Class’ body with new deformable crash structures and says that the seat belts and airbags are adaptive to each collision situation. A driver monitoring system, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, active parking assistance, and Active Brake Assist are standard. Mercedes offers a driving assist package that brings Active Steering Assist with lane-centering assistance, intersection turn assistance, active lane-change assist, Active Brake Assist, and automatic emergency steering.
As of this writing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the new 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. We expect the new vehicle to perform at least as well as its predecessor, though the IIHS updated its testing criteria with tougher requirements for the 2023 model year.
The 2024 E-Class gets two displays standard, but buyers can add a passenger display for the first time. Called the MBUX Superscreen, the added display can run third-party apps, such as the Angry Birds game, TikTok, Webex, Zoom, and the Vivaldi web browser. A selfie camera mounted on the dash offers webcam functionality when the car is stationary.
The new MBUX system offers improved voice controls with more functionality. The car’s infotainment system uses artificial intelligence to learn driver behavior and create tech routines, such as automatically turning on climate controls when the interior temperature reaches a certain level.
The MBUX Superscreen system also brings a 3D effect to the gauge cluster, using a unique LCD to show each eye a different pixel, which creates the perceived depth. Mercedes employed a zero-layer philosophy with the infotainment system that greatly simplifies operation and makes it easier to accomplish simple tasks. An augmented-reality system for navigation is standard, which overlays map directions onto a camera view in the gauge cluster.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard in the new E-Class, and passengers can stream music directly to the infotainment system from Spotify, Amazon, Tidal, and Apple Music. Though it didn’t elaborate on all the features that will be available via subscription, Mercedes says owners can activate and renew vehicle functions in the connected store. One function that will be available at launch is a projection function for the “digital light” headlights.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class competes in a surprisingly crowded class that includes its longtime nemesis, the BMW 5 Series. The BMW offers a solid, sporty driving experience and great tech, and buyers can upgrade to the raging performance-oriented M5. The Audi A6 is another perennial E-Class alternative that offers a posh interior and good power. Finally, the Genesis G80 is a fantastic car from outside the typical Euro brands that offers striking styling, plenty of standard features, and a long warranty.
