Mercedes-Benz overhauled the E-Class for the 2024 model year, giving it a striking interior and refined styling outside. While the sedan is the most popular of the available E-Class body styles here in the United States, Mercedes still offers a wagon variant, too, though in limited numbers. The All-Terrain is a more rugged version of the E-Class wagon with light off-road capability and beefy exterior styling. The new 2024 All-Terrain wagon gets a powerful mild-hybrid engine, standard all-wheel drive (AWD), and massive interior space for people and gear.

The 2024 E-Class All-Terrain wagon comes in a single trim level with one engine choice. Mercedes also updated the car's interior, giving it an available Hyperscreen system that extends the width of the dash. Mercedes builds the All-Terrain in its Sindelfingen, Germany, plant, where the automaker says it runs a net carbon-neutral operation. Mercedes says the new E-Class All-Terrain will arrive on dealers' lots in early 2024.

The E-Class All-Terrain borrows most of its exterior styling from its sedan counterpart but with a few exceptions. Beyond its wagon body style, the All-Terrain gets plenty of black plastic body cladding that gives it the rugged look its name suggests. Though it looks the part, Mercedes is careful to note that the E-Class All-Terrain's focus is "light off-roading" on gravel or dirt roads, meaning this car is not a rock crawler or hardcore rally fighter.
Mercedes equips 18-inch wheels as standard, but buyers can upgrade with 19- or 20-inch rollers. While it looks similar to earlier models, the new wagon is 1.1 inches wider with an almost one-inch longer wheelbase, affording more interior space.

The E-Class All-Terrain gets a refreshed interior that closely resembles the sedan. It offers a generous 59.8 inches of second-row elbow room, and its wagon backside affords up to 64.6 cubic feet of space with the second-row seats folded flat. Mercedes also equips active ambient lighting, and the front console offers generous storage space.
The new E-Class All-Terrain has a turbocharged, mild-hybrid, 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine making 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. A 9-speed automatic transmission and AWD are standard.
Adaptive air suspension is also standard and can adjust the compression and rebound stages of the dampers individually, which Mercedes says provides better comfort and performance. According to Mercedes, the system is self-leveling, so the car can carry a heavy load and remain level without sagging.
Mercedes equips a load of standard safety tech on the new All-Terrain, including adaptive high-beam headlights, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, forward-collision warning, and a driver monitoring system.
As of this writing, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) hasn't crash-tested the 2024 E-Class and E-Class All-Terrain. The Institute's updated protocols use more side-impact force to account for today's heavier vehicles and increased speeds, and the E-Class has yet to see the business end of the new setup.
A dual-12.3-inch infotainment system is standard on the new All-Terrain, featuring a large touchscreen and digital gauge cluster. It runs the latest MBUX infotainment interface, which features improved voice controls, more fluid navigation, and more straightforward menus. Standard features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C, HD Radio, and more.
Mercedes also offers its Hyperscreen system, which brings a passenger screen and turns most of the dash into a display. The system reacts to drive-mode selections, such as the off-road mode, which activates the wagon's exterior cameras and offers a "transparent hood" feature that shows more of the ground ahead of the vehicle. An optional sound visualization function projects images onto the screens that respond to the music playing on the stereo. Mercedes also updated the system to enable third-party apps, including the Angry Birds game, Zoom video conferencing, and more.
Buyers only have a few wagons from which to choose in 2023's America, but there are a couple of solid rivals to the E-Class All-Terrain. The Audi A4 Allroad and A6 Allroad models are the most direct competitors, offering plush interiors with the same light-off-roading capabilities. Buyers may also eye the Volvo V60 Cross Country or V90 Cross Country models, which are equally luxurious with trail-ready ride heights.
