Until now, the Lexus GX has been hanging on by a thread, as it has been almost 15 years since the luxury SUV received a complete redesign. At last, the 2024 model year will bring an all-new GX to market, and the changes Lexus made should turn it into a completely different off-road beast. Gone is the stout V8 engine from the last several model years; in its place is a new twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6. However, the GX retains its capability, with towing capacity reaching 8,000 pounds. Lexus says it will release a hybrid variant of the GX later.

Lexus will offer several configurations for the 2024 GX, including GX 550 Premium and Premium+, GX 550 Overtrail and Overtrail+, and GX 550 Luxury and Luxury+. All get the twin-turbo V6, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD). Though Lexus will build the also-new-for-2024 TX at Toyota Motor’s Indiana factory, the GX will roll off the line at Lexus’ Tahara plant in Japan before going on sale in early 2024.

Lexus heavily teased the GX before its launch, showing off all but the finer details of its new SUV. While the new look isn’t surprising, seeing it in its full glory is an experience. The GX picks up aggressive styling for 2024 with beefy fender flares, a wide stance, and slightly expanded exterior dimensions. The SUV is now 3.7 inches wider, 2.8 inches longer, and rides on a 2.4-inch longer wheelbase.
Wheel sizes range from 18 inches on the rugged Overtrail model to 22 inches on the top Luxury trims. Lexus will offer 11 paint colors with a few exclusive earth-tone options for the new Overtrail models.

Lexus describes the new GX’s interior as “lush,” saying it conveys the SUV’s ruggedness while retaining a luxurious feel. It offers seating for up to seven people, which for previous models has meant spacious accommodations in the first two rows with a cramped third-row seat for occasional use. You can configure the second-row seats as a 3-person bench or optional captain’s chairs. The seats feature an easy sliding system for access to the third row. Heated and ventilated front seats are standard, while heated second-row seats are available.
Lexus offers synthetic or semi-aniline leather upholstery, and three interior color schemes are available. The Overtrail trim gets black synthetic leather and olive synthetic suede accents, and a lighter synthetic leather option is available. Twelve cupholders come standard. Lexus notes that cargo space can hold up to five suitcases with the third row folded down, but the automaker did not give exact measurements.
The beefy V8 engine from years past is gone, and in its place, Lexus installs a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine. The automaker pairs it with a 10-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD. Power output is more robust than the V8’s specs, landing at 349 horsepower—up from 301 before—and 479 pound-feet of torque. That powertrain enables an 8,000-pound tow rating.
A Torsen limited-slip center differential comes standard on the new GX, and the Overtrail model adds an electronic-locking rear differential. Lexus improved the transfer case with faster shifting times into 4 Hi, and adaptive suspension is available. Lexus offers several off-road upgrades for the Overtrail model, including a multi-terrain drive-mode selection system, crawl control, and a 3D-terrain camera system.
Every 2024 GX comes with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which brings the usual suspects, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. The proactive driving-assistance system helps monitor for pedestrians and other vehicles and can help prevent collisions by maintaining a safe distance from the obstacles.
The GX moves into the modern age in 2024 with a new infotainment system running on an expansive 14-inch touchscreen. Lexus says its new interface is faster, more intuitive, smoother, and better looking than its predecessor, improving its performance in every measurable way. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
Lexus retains physical controls alongside the large touchscreen, which should reduce distraction and make interacting with the SUV easier while driving. Six USB charging ports are standard, and the SUV comes standard with wireless device charging and a 120-volt AC plug.
The 2024 Lexus GX is an odd duck among luxury SUVs, as most focus exclusively on performance and on-road comfort. Though one could cross-shop the GX with SUVs like the Audi Q8 and Volvo XC90, its body-on-frame construction aligns it more closely with vehicles like the Infiniti QX80 and even the Lexus LX. That said, the GX is smaller than those full-size SUVs, and its third-row seat isn’t as capacious. Buyers may also explore the Toyota 4Runner or Sequoia, but neither offers the luxury or styling of the GX.
