Heavy-duty (HD) trucks have become common daily drivers for many people, as their expense makes it difficult to own one as a dedicated work hauler. As a result, automakers have been adding more luxury and capability to their HD trucks. Continuing that trend, GMC recently announced the latest addition to its lineup.
The 2024 Sierra HD AT4X and Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition offer factory off-road upgrades but retain much of their hardcore work capabilities. The HD truck follows the GMC Sierra 1500 in getting the beefy AT4X treatment. However, the automaker upgraded more than just the truck’s appearance for the new model year.

The 2024 Sierra HD AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition come standard with a 6.6-liter gas V8, but GMC offers a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel upgrade. In addition to a load of off-road equipment, GMC offers trailering upgrades that make it easier and safer to tow heavy loads. The partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) gives the AT4X AEV Edition a load of off-road gear and unique components from the off-road company.

The GMC Sierra HD AT4X looks like a standard Sierra HD, just with a few rounds of steroid injections. It rides on a 1.5-inch factory lift and gets beefy 35-inch Goodyear Territory tires, giving it a look to match its off-road capability. The AT4X AEV Edition gets steel bumpers with integrated tow points and a front winch mounting point. The truck also gets more underbody protection and exclusive 18-inch wheels.

GMC updated the Sierra HD line for 2024 with a new interior design. As it did with the Sierra 1500, GMC gave the Sierra HD a more upscale cabin with better quality materials and a more attractive design. The black interior offers full-grain leather upholstery and massaging front seats. GMC added ash wood trim, and the AEV Edition gets the logo embroidered on the front seats.
The 2024 Sierra AT4X comes standard with a 6.6-liter gas V8 that makes 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. An available 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 makes 470 hp and 975 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and 4-wheel drive. The truck adds Multimatic DSSV dampers, an electronic locking rear differential, a 1.5-inch factory lift, and unique upper and lower control arms.
The Sierra HD has a handful of advanced driver aids, but GMC holds most back in added-cost packages. Standard tech includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, following-distance indicator, and front pedestrian braking. GMC offers a range of trailering aids, including a “transparent” trailer view camera system with Gooseneck/fifth-wheel capability. Blind-spot warning and adaptive cruise control with trailer coverage are also available. Buyers can also outfit the truck with a 14-camera system that offers views of the bed, hitch, hitch guidance, and trailer.
GMC equips a 13.4-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch configurable digital gauge cluster as standard equipment. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, and the truck offers a 15-inch head-up display. Other standard features include a Bose 12-speaker stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, and Google built-in services. GMC’s infotainment system remains one of the easier-to-use interfaces after the move to Google tech. The menus are clearly labeled, and it’s easy to accomplish quick tasks with a tap or two, which makes the system less distracting while driving.
The world of heavy-duty trucks is surprisingly competitive. The GMC Sierra HD AT4X faces off against the Ford F-Series Super Duty Tremor trucks, which are exceptionally popular. The Chevrolet Silverado HD comes in a new ZR2 format for 2024. Buyers can also upgrade the Chevy with AEV gear, so the GMC will have a twin and a natural rival out of the gate. Ram offers off-road versions of its HD trucks, but they aren’t on the same level as the Sierra HD AT4X or Silverado HD ZR2.
