2024 Ford F-150 Preview

Chris Teague | Sep 14, 2023

Ford sells more trucks than anybody else, making its entry-level full-size pickup, the F-150, one of the most important models in the country. The truck is getting a notable update for the 2024 model year after a complete redesign in 2021. For 2024, Ford gives the popular F-150 a new standard engine, wider hybrid powertrain availability, and a load of new tech features. The automaker is also offering a new Pro Access Tailgate that allows various opening and storage capabilities in the bed.

The standard 2024 F-150 comes in a multitude of trim levels, including XL, STX, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Tremor. A new Platinum Plus configuration also steps into the lineup to replace the Limited trim as Ford’s top F-150 offering. The high-performance Raptor is available in standard or “R” form, with the latter getting a supercharged V8. Ford’s engine lineup for the standard truck is equally as expansive as the trim lines, ranging from the base 2.7-liter V6 to the long-running 5.0-liter V8.

No pricing or release date details are available, but expect the truck to go on sale in early 2024 with a slightly higher starting price than the current F-150 XL, which costs just shy of $36,000 to start.

Ford stuck relatively close to the F-150’s established formula for 2024, though there are notable styling updates. Top trims get a new LED running light design that frames a boxier grille. Less-expensive configurations have a slightly different grille design, with the STX’s snout getting a matte black grille and the Lariat getting a gloss black component. The off-road-oriented Tremor gets orange accents, and all trims get new bumpers and a novel taillight design. Ford also revealed a revised logo with a more prominent font.

The Raptor doesn’t appear to have changed as much, and Ford still offers the trucks with 35- or 37-inch tires. Unlike the standard truck, which gets the updated Ford logo, the Raptor variants continue with the “FORD” name spelled out in giant script across the grille. The Raptor also gets unique body graphics with the model name and a powerful hood shape.

The big story with the new F-150’s exterior design is its Pro Access Tailgate. As General Motors did with the Silverado and Sierra, Ford offers a flexible, multi-function tailgate that lets owners open the gate 100 degrees from the driver’s side. The tailgate also has bump stops to prevent overextending the hinges. With the gate down, it can fold to enable up to 19 inches more reach into the bed. Ford says it torture-tested the tailgate to ensure durability.

The F-150’s interior look hasn’t changed much, but Ford upgraded the cabin finishes, and color options vary by trim. The XLT and Lariat trims get dark “smoked truffle” color seats and black interior finishes. The King Ranch, which typically boasts one of the nicest pickup truck interiors on the market, gets a bi-metallic color scheme and updated door trim that Ford says is reminiscent of a bullwhip. It also gets new “Bronzed Copper” accents that bring an upscale tarnished brass look.

The Platinum Plus configuration, which replaces the top Limited trim in 2024, also gets smoked truffle accents and Bronzed Copper, while the standard Platinum version gets blue accents and brushed aluminum. Ford notes that it created all materials and interior design elements to stand up to abuse and says they’re meant to endure the “high-intensity use cases” that some F-150 owners frequently experience.

2024 Ford F-150 Specs - Find the best Ford F-150 deals!

Previous F-150s came standard with a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter V6 engine. However, the 2024 model ditches that powertrain in favor of a standard turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 engine, which was previously optional. It makes 325 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. The available 5.0-liter V8 produces 400 hp and 410 pound-feet of torque, while the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 produces 400 hp and 500 pound-feet. The hybrid powertrain also incorporates a twin-turbo V6. It pairs with an electric motor for 430 hp and 570 pound-feet of torque. Ford pairs all 2024 F-150 engines with a 10-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or 4-wheel drive.

As of this writing, Ford hasn’t detailed specs for either version of the 2024 Raptor but has suggested that the R variant could get more than its predecessor’s 700 hp. The off-road beasts get new shocks with better rebounds, and Ford redesigned its bumpers with stronger tow hooks and a modular design.

2024 Ford F-150 Safety - Find the best Ford F-150 deals!

Ford gave the new F-150 10 standard driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency brakingforward-collision warninglane-keeping assistance and lane-departure warning, and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning. The truck is available with Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and Ford still offers the onboard scale system with a smart hitch to measure tongue weight. Depending on the configuration, F-150 buyers get an updated BlueCruise system, which brings hands-free driving to the truck. Ford offers a 90-day trial, after which buyers can choose to pay annually or monthly to keep the service.

While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has yet to publish results for the refreshed 2024 F-150, it gave the structurally similar 2023 model the highest-possible 5-star overall safety rating. While the 2023 Ford F-150 earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2022, the organization hasn’t subjected the truck to the new side-crash test that uses more impact force.

2024 Ford F-150 Technology - Find the best Ford F-150 deals!

Every F-150 now has a 12-inch touchscreen running Ford’s excellent Sync 4 infotainment system. The automaker pairs it with a standard 12-inch configurable digital gauge cluster that responds to drive-mode selections with graphics and animations. Moving to the larger screen enables running two apps side-by-side, including towing, off-road, and rock-crawling drive-mode features.

Sync brings all the typical features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the new F-150 is available with a head-up display for the first time. Ford also offers a new Stolen Vehicle Services feature for 2024. It can help locate a stolen truck and alert the owner if it detects someone tampering with it or gaining access.

2024 Ford F-150 Competitors - Find the best Ford F-150 deals!

America’s full-size truck market is as cutthroat as it gets, and the F-150 will have its work cut out for it in 2024. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra got updates for 2022, bringing improved interior designs and better tech. While much of their rugged work truck roots shine through, both have improved over previous years. The Toyota Tundra also recently got an overhaul, which gave it a pair of powerful V6 engine options, and the Ram 1500 remains the best-riding truck in its segment. The Nissan Titan isn’t a bad truck, but is not as fresh or capable as the others.
