2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty Preview

Chris Teague | Sep 28, 2022

In the past couple of years, Ford redesigned the F-150 and finally released the all-electric F-150 Lightning, so it was high time for an F-Series Super Duty overhaul. The hard-working trucks got what they needed for the 2023 model year. Ford announced a more powerful line of heavy-duty trucks with a load of available new tech, great standard safety features, and unique upfits to make the trucks more appropriate for specific industries.

The 2023 Super Duty is available in six trim levels, including XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. Four engines are on offer, and while Ford hasn’t elaborated on specs for the new powertrains, expect torque numbers that extend past the 1,000-pound-foot mark and impressive horsepower outputs.

What’s New for the 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty?

  • All-new, full-size, heavy-duty Ford pickup
  • New standard 6.8-liter gas V8 engine
  • New standard Ford-designed 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Enhanced technology, including a suite of cloud-based services
  • The 2023 Super Duty trucks are the first in the world to come with embedded 5G
  • Produced in Louisville, Kentucky, and Avon Lake, Ohio
  • Sales will begin in early 2023, though some features won’t arrive until spring

The new Super Duty trucks don’t represent a significant departure from the tried-and-true pickup truck formula Ford has perfected over the decades. New LED running lights flank an updated and refined grille, and Ford offers factory upfits to add a snowplow or specialty lights. LED headlights are now available for all trims, and Ford says the truck’s vents are functional. Seven new grille designs are available, engineered to maximize airflow and cooling.

Ford offers some of the same appearance and off-road packages for the Super Duty that it does for the F-150. The STX, Sport, and Black packages bring unique styling and graphics to the Super Duty Line. A new XL Off-Road package brings beefy 33-inch tires, a raised air dam, skid plates, an electronic-locking rear differential, and special water-fording axle tubes to the entry-level trim.

The Tremor Off-Road package remains an option and brings a front-end lift with off-road suspension. Ford equips a Dana front axle, 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear tires, a rock-crawling drive mode, and Trail Turn Assist.

The F-250 is available in a single-rear-wheel configuration only, but the F-350 and F-450 are available with dual rear wheels. Wheel sizes range from 17 inches for the F-250 to 19.5 inches for F-450 models equipped with dual rear wheels. Ford offers the trucks in regular, SuperCab (extended), and crew cab configurations with either a 6.75- or 8-foot pickup bed.

A new Ford Pro Upfit Integration System allows buyers to customize the exterior of their trucks with various equipment and upgrades. Ford offers a utility crane upfit, snow plow upfits, and more. The automaker says its system allows aftermarket manufacturers better access to the truck’s electrical system and other components, allowing for tighter product integrations and a better experience. The upfit system also supports cloud-based connections, so owners can control equipment without leaving the cab.

The 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty features opulent interiors and high-end materials in top trims. However, the entry-level XL will continue to offer a more utilitarian, stripped-down affair. Ford hasn’t detailed much on the new truck’s cabin features, but images show an available panoramic sunroof, quilted leather upholstery, and unique color schemes. Available fold-flat seats allow for naps or even sleeping overnight in the cab, and Ford offers a fold-flat center console with room for a laptop or notebook. There’s also a new center console design with a slot that can hold a tablet upright.

2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty Specs

Ford offers four powertrain options for the 2023 Super Duty but hasn’t detailed specs. Ford says the new standard 6.8-liter gas V8 engine will bring more low-end torque, improving towing capabilities and making it easier to merge or start on steep grades. Other choices include the 7.3-liter “Godzilla” gas V8 and the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8.

While the 7.3-liter gas engine is a holdover, Ford updated its air intake and tuning and says it’s targeting best-in-class gas horsepower and torque for the new model year. Meanwhile, the carryover 6.7-liter diesel now features longer service intervals between oil changes to reduce downtime.

A fourth option—the newly available 6.7-liter high-output Power Stroke diesel V8—comes with new exhaust manifolds, a unique turbocharger design, and specialized tuning that Ford says should help it achieve the best horsepower and torque in its class.

2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty Safety

The 2023 Ford Super Duty is available with a staggering number of standard and available tech features. Ford hasn’t elaborated on which ones will be standard or cost extra but expect lower trims to lack most advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). Higher trims will likely come with standard ADAS such as automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning, with the rest held back as options. Ford says available features may include:

2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty Technology

One of the main areas in which Ford focused its efforts during the redesign of the Super Duty is technology. Starting with infotainment, the base XL trim gets an 8-inch touchscreen display, while all others come with a 12-inch screen. A customizable 12-inch digital gauge cluster is standard, and Ford equips four USB ports. The system runs Sync 4 infotainment software, which offers a more intuitive and responsive interface than most others. Available tech includes a wireless charging pad and two B&O sound systems, one with 640 watts and one with 1,080 watts.

Ford says that 90 percent of Super Duty owners use their trucks for heavy towing, and the automaker offers several features to make it easier. A newly available onboard scale system that estimates cargo weight in real-time can help the driver with trailer tongue-weight distribution. A 360-degree trailer camera provides a bird’s-eye view of the trailer, and the newly updated blind-spot warning system covers trailers, including goosenecks and fifth-wheel units.

Since the tailgate must be down to hitch a gooseneck or fifth wheel, Ford offers a camera located at the top of the gate to provide a view when backing to connect a trailer. The Pro Trailer Hitch Assist system automatically backs the truck, and a new trailer navigation system helps direct the driver around sharp curves, low bridges, and other obstacles.

Ford also offers a load of tech for fleets and to keep the truck secure. A new Trailer Theft Alert sends notifications via the FordPass app if someone tries to disconnect the trailer while the truck is locked. Owners with a Ford Pro Telematics subscription can get alerts if something hits the truck while it’s parked, and the Fleet Start Inhibit function allows fleet customers to schedule when operators can start the trucks. Other options include forward and reverse sensing, front and rear braking assist, and a full-color head-up display.

Finally, Ford says the 2023 Super Duty is the first pickup in the United States to come with embedded 5G capability. Running on the AT&T network, the system can provide Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices and helps bring faster updates for navigation and music downloads.

2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty Competitors

According to Ford, Super Duty trucks are economic powerhouses for the automaker, generating more revenue than some Fortune 500s, including Marriott, Nordstrom, and Southwest Airlines. Even so, they have stiff competition from the recently redesigned Chevrolet Silverado HD, which brings similarly updated tech and capabilities. Likewise, the GMC Sierra HD is due for an update, and it will get a more upscale and luxurious approach to heavy-duty trucks. Lastly, Ram HD trucks offer the best ride quality in the class and deluxe interiors. Despite the formidable competition, Ford’s Super Duty updates will likely be enough to keep it on top, not only because it’s the newest entrant, but because the clever mix of features and design with heavy capability will be enough for Ford to sell as many trucks as it can build.
