Like most automakers, BMW now builds as many—if not more—SUVs as it does sedans and coupes. As part of its utility vehicle expansion, BMW released the X7 a few years ago as its largest SUV, and now the big family hauler is getting an update. The 2023 model year brings updated styling, massaged powertrains, and new technology to BMW’s 3-row SUV. Its already controversial large grille is now just one part of a busy, heavily styled front fascia.
BMW will offer the 2023 X7 in three configurations: xDrive40i, M60i, and Alpina XB7. Pricing starts at just under $80,000 and extends to over $100,000 with options. The X7 competes against the Audi Q7/Q8, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and many other heavy-hitters in the luxury 3-row SUV segment.
For 2023, BMW refreshes the X7’s exterior with new air intakes and a reworked grille up front. The headlights are split, with daytime running lights in one unit and headlights in another. The lower front fascia features chrome accents around a large central air duct, and the large grille remains in place from previous generations.
With the new X7, BMW focuses on sustainability, bringing several unique materials to the SUV’s interior, including recycled plastic threads in the floor mats, 50-percent recycled materials in various air ducts and components, and fully recycled material lining the cargo area. The X7 comes standard with Sensafin upholstery, which looks and feels like leather. Heating is now standard for the front seats, with cooling and massaging functions available. The M60i adds full Merino leather upholstery.
The X7’s cabin gets a new ambient lighting system with a light bar built into the front passenger area. It features welcome animation and can alert various vehicle functions, such as flashing when an incoming phone call is on the line. BMW redesigned the center console with new iDrive controller buttons and buttons for the various drive modes.
Three powertrains are on offer for the new X7. The entry-level unit is a brand-new engine for BMW: A 3.0-liter inline-6 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that produces 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. In the middle, the X7 M60i xDrive comes with a twin-turbocharged V8 and mild-hybrid system that produces 523 hp and 553 pound-feet of torque. The Alpina XB7 gets an even more powerful twin-turbo V8 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Combined output lands at 630 hp and 590 pound-feet of torque.
Though most will avoid using their X7 in a drag race, the two V8-powered models certainly have the grunt to reel in competitors. BMW claims the M60i can run from zero-to-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, and the XB7 can do it in just 4 seconds. All variants come with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The M60i trim comes standard with an adaptive suspension system. According to BMW, it features a self-leveling function and can disconnect the SUV’s anti-roll bars to reduce body roll. The base X7 gets 21-inch wheels, but 23-inch rollers are available, which BMW says is its largest wheel offering to date.
The new X7 comes standard with a forward-collision warning system, traffic sign recognition, a trailering assistant, and a parking assistant. BMW says it will issue over-the-air updates to improve functionality over time. The X7’s forward-collision warning system is enhanced for the new model year and can now react to oncoming traffic. Sensors can also pick up a pedestrian or cyclist approaching the vehicle from the side or behind, reducing the risk of an accident when turning right at a busy intersection.
BMW’s new Maneuver Assistant feature uses GPS information and data gathered from the SUV’s steering system to store automated maneuvers of up to 200 meters each. For example, the driver can store a maneuver to pull into a curvy driveway or traverse a tight parking lot. The vehicle can then carry out the maneuver while the driver controls it through the BMW app from outside the car.
The X7 comes with BMW’s latest iDrive 8 infotainment software. It runs on a 14.9-inch touchscreen that features a curved display. A configurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that can show maps and other vehicle information accompanies the touchscreen. A new augmented navigation system overlays map information over live video captured from a driver-view camera system. The feed shows on the center display with augmented directions and route information.
BMW says it improved the X7’s voice controls for the new model year, and the system now recognizes natural speech and can proactively make suggestions based on prior driver behavior. Drivers can use the new Intelligent Personal Assistant system to adjust the climate controls, roll down a window, or interact with audio settings, among other things.
A new 5G modem comes standard, which BMW says allows faster data transmission than previous versions. It uses a unique SIM that follows the person, not the vehicle, so that a driver can take their profile to another BMW vehicle with the same tech on board. Once registered, the car shows up in the My BMW app.
The 2023 BMW X7 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, Audi Q7 and Q8, Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade, and others.
