Current Infiniti SUVs are functional and pleasant to drive when called upon to carry kids or cargo, but apart from a few signature exterior styling cues, there's nothing to distinguish them from other premium-brand crossovers. That changes with the 2022 Infiniti QX55.

If the QX55 looks familiar, that's no accident. It's a tribute to the fabulously beautiful Infiniti FX of the early 21st century (and last seen as the 2017 QX70), which had a similar arcing roofline.

Also known for its cramped interior, the ancient FX wasn't actually good at typical SUV tasks. That’s likely to continue as an issue with the 2022 Infiniti QX55, which is heavily based on the QX50 compact crossover.

Compared to the QX50, the 2022 Infiniti QX55 has a cleaner, curvier silhouette and a notched hatch design that eliminates the flat-butt look typical of crossover SUVs. The grille has an audacity not seen on other Infinitis (though you're meant to see expertly folded origami paper in its mesh expanse), and its LED headlights stare harder than the ones on the QX50.

Around back, each taillight has 45 individual LEDs that Infiniti likens to piano keys. The lower rear fascia is body color with sportier styling. Standard 20-inch wheels ensure an authoritative stance.

An alluring roofline comes at a price, and in the Infiniti QX55 (as in other coupe-inspired SUVs), it takes the form of reduced headroom, shoulder room, and cargo capacity. Infiniti says the cargo bay measures 26.9 cubic feet, compared to 31.4 cu.-ft. in the QX50. Maximum capacity with the rear seats folded down shrinks by 11 cu.-ft., from 65.1 to 54.1.

On the other hand, both SUVs offer 38.7 inches of rear legroom which bodes well for anyone needing to install a rear-facing car seat. Rear hip room is the same, too.

Interior design follows the QX50 closely, but you can expect some different colors and materials in the 2022 QX55, including a Monaco Red/Graphite ensemble seen in the early photos. The Luxe and Essential trim levels come with brushed aluminum trim, while the Sensory gets black Maple wood inlays.

Dual 7- and 8-inch touchscreens are standard, and as in the QX50, the lower screen is surrounded by hard buttons to keep the touch interface from overwhelming users. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is standard, as are four USB inputs (one of them Type-C) and 4G LTE hotspot capability. Infiniti plans to offer over-the-air updates for system and map data.

Optional Features - Find the best Infiniti deals!

On the options list for the QX55 Essential, you'll find factory upgrades including a head-up display, embedded navigation, and a 16-speaker Bose audio system. These items are standard on the QX55 Sensory, along with upgraded leather upholstery and a motion-activated power liftgate.

Under the Hood - Find the best Infiniti deals!

Standard on all 2022 Infiniti QX55 crossovers, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with variable-compression technology is rated to make 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

It's paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and all-wheel-drive is standard. The AWD system ordinarily routes all the engine's torque to the front wheels, but when traction conditions dictate, it can send up to 50 percent of available torque to the rear wheels. It can also selectively brake individual wheels.

We've sampled this powertrain in the QX50, where it provides competent performance but underwhelming real-world fuel economy. We wonder if shoppers drawn to the QX55's faster roofline might also expect more rapid acceleration. Unquestionably, Infiniti's variable-compression four-cylinder is sophisticated. But when you floor the throttle, it's a far cry from the V-6 and V-8 engines you could get it in the old FX.

Infiniti will use active sound enhancement technology to pipe an improved engine soundtrack through the audio-system speakers in the QX55.

Safety - Find the best Infiniti deals!

Every 2020 QX55 comes with a forward-collision and blind-spot warning systems. Infiniti's ProPilot Assist Level 2 advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) is optional on the Essential trim level and standard on QX55 Sensory. ProPilot Assist includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and steering assist.
