If you’ve been waiting for Audi to introduce a more affordable electric vehicle, the new 2022 Audi Q4 E-tron is welcome news. The automaker expects new Q4 E-tron prices to start under $45,000, not including destination charges. And that’s before you factor in the federal income tax credit and any state or local incentives.
Two versions will be available, and Audi says the Q4 is similar in size to the popular Q5, inside and out. The Q4 E-tron has a traditional compact crossover SUV shape, while the Q4 Sportback E-tron adopts fastback styling to qualify as a so-called “SUV coupe.” Series designations include 40 and 50, the former indicating rear-wheel drive and the latter all-wheel drive.
Once they go on sale by the end of 2021, Audi will offer five fully electric vehicles, more than any other luxury brand by the automaker’s estimation. Audi will build the Q4 E-tron in a net carbon-neutral factory in Zwickau, Germany.
Though its been proven multiple times, the 2022 Audi Q4 E-tron demonstrates that aerodynamically efficient electric vehicles can look terrific. Aside from its enclosed Singleframe grille, which gives the beautifully chiseled Q4 E-tron a familiar face, nothing about the exterior design hints at the electric powertrain residing within or at a coefficient of drag as low as 0.26.
Four exterior colors limit choice, but you can dress the new Q4 E-tron up with different wheel designs, sporty S-Line styling cues, and Black Optic exterior trim. The available Matrix LED headlights also let owners configure the daytime running light signature to one of four styles.
The Q4 E-tron’s interior emphasizes geometric design and the fine attention to detail for which Audi is known. The company says it uses numerous recycled materials within the electric SUV’s cabin and emphasizes intelligent storage solutions throughout.
Aside from how the 10.1-inch Multi-Media Interface (MMI) Touch Response display is definitively angled toward the driver, one of the most notable Q4 E-tron interior flourishes is a steering wheel with a flattened top and bottom. It includes capacitive hands-on recognition as well as touch-sensing controls for the instrumentation and infotainment technology.
Because the Q4 E-tron has no center drivetrain tunnel, Audi claims the SUV will supply generous rear-seat legroom. A configurable load floor adds utility.
The 2022 Audi Q4 40 E-tron has a single permanently excited electric motor driving the rear wheels. It makes 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts), draws electricity from a net 77-kilowatt-hour battery pack (82 kWh gross), and delivers an Audi-estimated 250 miles of driving range by EPA standards.
For more performance and all-wheel drive, the Q4 50 E-tron and Q4 Sportback 50 E-tron have two electric motors, one at each axle. Together, they make 295 hp (220 kW), and they use the same battery pack as the Q4 40 E-tron. In the 50-series models, the front electric motor activates only when performance or traction demands it, preserving range and efficiency.
Audi says the Q4 E-trons are compatible with AC Level 2 charging up to 11 kW and DC fast charging up to 125 kW. An Active Thermal Management system provides optimum battery cooling, and an available onboard heat pump delivers heat from the battery pack to the cabin to reduce the electrical load on the batteries.
Drivers choose between Efficiency, Comfort, Dynamic, and Individual driving modes. A Predictive Efficiency Assist system coordinates with the Q4 E-tron’s advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) to optimize range and overall operational efficiency.
Additionally, an Intelligent Recuperation System gives drivers control of a three-stage energy regeneration system via paddles on the steering wheel and the regenerative braking system. It incorporates navigation and topographical data to maximize energy recovery and preserve the EV’s driving range.
Audi says the new Q4 E-tron models will offer the company’s Pre Sense collection of collision preparation systems and numerous crash avoidance technologies. They include:
Additionally, automatic high-beam headlights are on the safety system menu, along with adaptive cruise control. Audi plans to offer its Traffic Jam Assist technology as an option, as well as a surround-view camera system.
Audi will equip the Q4 E-tron with a standard 10.25-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 10.1-inch MMI Touch Response infotainment system with natural voice recognition. The company’s Virtual Cockpit instrumentation, which will expand upon the standard offering, is optional.
A head-up display (HUD) is also optional, and it features an augmented reality overlay for maximum assistance in finding destinations. The HUD data appears to hover 30 feet in front of the driver, according to Audi.
Fans of Audi’s Bang & Olufsen sound systems might be disappointed to learn that Sonos provides the premium audio system in the Q4 E-tron models. Let’s reserve judgment on this decision until we’ve had a chance to sample it.
When the new Audi Q4 E-tron goes on sale, its direct and indirect competitors will include vehicles such as the BMW i4, Ford Mustang Mach E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Tesla Model Y, and Volvo C40 Recharge.
