2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet photo Mercedes-Benz has never sold a C-Class convertible before. Well, technically. Today’s E-Class convertible is actually built on the previous-generation C-Class platform, but that’s a story for another day.

Switching gears, so to speak, Mercedes once again expands the C-Class lineup with its announcement at the 2016 Geneva International Motor Show that a 2017 C-Class Cabriolet is coming soon. The new car will be available in C300 and AMG C43 model series.

Exterior Features

Dimensionally, the new C-Class Cabriolet is identical to the redesigned C-Class Coupe, except for a slight increase in height. Equipped with a multi-layer, acoustic fabric soft top with a glass rear window, the C-Class Cabriolet goes from closed to open in 20 seconds and at speeds up to 31 mph, according to Mercedes.

Standard equipment includes LED headlights, LED taillights, and 18-in. aluminum wheels. The AMG C43 gets a different appearance and lightweight wheels. Mercedes says that the convertible top is available in four different colors.

Interior Features

Mercedes provides heat-reflective leather upholstery for the new C-Class Cabriolet, which is designed to stay cooler when the car is parked in the sun, with the roof down, on warm days. For cooler weather, a standard AirScarf neck-warming system helps owners enjoy top-down driving for a longer period of time. The automatic climate control system also adjusts operation based on whether the top is raised or lowered, and dependent upon the temperature outside.

Optional Features

Automatic seat belt extenders make buckling up easier, and the 4-passenger car’s individual rear seats fold down in order to expand cargo capacity.Available in a wide range of paint, upholstery, trim, and headliner choices, the C-Class Cabriolet can be tailored to specific buyer preferences.

The first convertibles to roll off the assembly line will be C300 Edition 1 variants with unique specification, inside and out. A Sport package is offered for the C300, adding AMG body styling, lightweight AMG wheels, chrome diamond radiator pins, sport pedals, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The Sport package also equips the car with sport suspension tuning, larger front brakes, and Sport Direct-Steer steering calibration.

Under the Hood

A turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is installed in the C300. It generates 241 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, and includes a standard automatic engine start/stop system. Mercedes claims the C300 Cabrio will accelerate to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is optional.

Choose the Mercedes-AMG C43 for maximum performance. It’s twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6 engine cranks out 362 horsepower and 384 lb.-ft. of torque, good enough to sling this convertible to 60 mph in a claimed 4.7 seconds. Automatic engine start/stop technology is present to help improve fuel economy.

All C-Class convertibles have a 9-speed automatic transmission as well as Dynamic Select technology with Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual driving modes.

An AirMatic continuously adjustable suspension is optional for the C300 Cabriolet. The AMG C43 Cabriolet has an AMG-tuned Ride Control suspension with adaptive 3-stage dampers offering Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus settings. Also, the AMG C43 features revised steering components and tuning.

A drowsy and inattentive driver-monitoring system is also standard, along with a forward-collision warning system, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive front air bags.

Options include adaptive cruise control with steering assist, pedestrian-detection system, active lane-keeping assist, active blind-spot assist, cross-traffic assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. In many driving situations, safety systems prepare the brakes to respond with maximum effect.

Mercedes will equip the new C-Class Cabriolet with a Comand infotainment system, Frontbass sound system, and Mbrace Connect with a long list of subscription services. Mbrace Remote Online will allow owners to remotely access various aspects of the vehicle from a smartphone application.

Upgrade to the Comand Online infotainment system for a larger 8.4-in. screen displaying greater resolution, hard-drive navigation, Wi-Fi connection, and natural voice-recognition technology. Additional options include a Burmeister premium audio system, a 360-degree camera system, and Parking Assist, which steers the car into a parking space while the driver operates the pedals and transmission.
