2017 Cadillac XT5 photo The 2017 Cadillac XT5, which is the abbreviation for “Crossover Touring Five,” is a new compact premium SUV model that replaces the outgoing segment-leading SRX. The XT5, which debuted at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, will arrive in dealer showrooms next spring. It is built on a lighter chassis, with a new, more fuel-efficient powertrain and offers many advanced safety features. The first of four new crossovers in Cadillac’s stable, the XT5 may be competitive with the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and X5, Mercedes-Benz GLK/GLC, and even the Lexus RX Series, according to Cadillac. The new XT5 will be built at GM’s assembly plant in Spring Hill, TN.

Exterior Features

The XT5 is described by its designers as “bold, distinctive, sophisticated with superb driving dynamics.” The lighter construction shaves off 278 lbs. from the new chassis in comparison with the outgoing SRX. It features chrome trim, a larger grille, and new front fascia with vertical winglike LED headlights. Door handles are chrome. The rear liftgate of the XT5 includes hands-free operation with a swipe control under the rear bumper.

Interior Features

The cabin of the new XT5 is more spacious, and rear-seat legroom is increased by 3.2 in. compared with the outgoing SRX. In addition, the rear seat reclines and slides forward and backward. Interior surfaces are wider, and there is more emphasis on the efficient use of cabin space, according to the automaker. Like all Cadillac models, the XT5’s interior is assembled with cut-and-sewn wrapped panels, rather than molded surfaces. Power seats are heated, ventilated and upholstered in leather, and there is wood trim. The new center console design includes ample storage space.

Optional Features

The XT5 Platinum will offer decorative trim options such as carbon fiber, aluminum, and three kinds of wood. Also, there will be exterior trim choices along with more advanced technology features included in the Platinum edition.

An optional, advanced “twin clutch” AWD system also is available for strong performance in wet, snowy or icy conditions, Cadillac states.

The XT5 comes with 18-in. wheels, although 20-in. wheels are optional. An optional head-up display feature is available, as are full LED headlamps. A Surround Vision feature enables a bird’s-eye view of the perimeter around the vehicle to assist in parking.

In addition, the new XT5 features Cadillac’s Driver Awareness and Driver Assist packages to aid with vision and collision avoidance. Packages include automatic front and rear braking for low-speed conditions, a lane-keeping assist feature, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control, and automatic park assist.

Under the Hood

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 will be powered by a new, 3.6-liter V-6 engine which produces 310 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. The redesigned engine features fuel-management cylinder-deactivation technology, which allows the engine to switch to a fuel-saving 4-cylinder mode when the load conditions are low or moderate. The next-generation engine was introduced earlier this year in the brand’s ATS and CTS premium sedans. Start/stop technology also helps save fuel and reduce emissions. A new 8-speed automatic transmission is standard for the XT5 and features the first electronically controlled transmission shifter for a Cadillac model, according to the company.

Fuel Economy

No fuel-economy data is available yet for the XT5 with its more fuel-efficient powertrain. The outgoing SRX model with the previous 3.6-liter engine was rated by the EPA at 17 mpg in city driving and averaged 24 mpg on the highway. The new engine likely makes modest improvements on these numbers.

It enhances the driver’s rear vision by 300%, according to Cadillac, and uses a video display that works on top of the conventional inside rearview mirror. A camera records wider images in back and streams images to special software, which deletes the roof, pillars, and rear-seat passengers from obstructing the driver’s rear view, Cadillac explains.

In addition, the XT5 features Cadillac’s Driver Awareness and Driver Assist packages to help with vision and collision avoidance. These include automatic front and rear braking for low-speed conditions, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control, and automatic park assist.

Standard technology items in the 2017 XT5 will include an infotainment system, electric seats, satellite navigation system, and LTE connectivity. Cadillac’s CUE system for connectivity and control is upgraded with a faster and more powerful processor. The XT5 also features an integrated wireless charger for mobile devices, with a slot in the center console. Like all Cadillac models in 2016, the XT5 features 4G wireless connectivity, standard integrated Wi-Fi hotspot, and in-vehicle phone-integration connections.
