The 2015 Ford Edge is a midsize, 5-passenger crossover SUV that Ford will sell in several global markets. Vehicles headed for the United States will be built in a factory located near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and will be offered in SE, SEL, Sport, and new Titanium trim levels.

Exterior Features

Longer and taller than the model it replaces, the redesigned 2015 Edge also gains an inch of wheelbase. Some trim levels feature active grille shutters and air curtains to improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, and
20-in. aluminum wheels will be offered for the Sport and Titanium versions.

Interior Features

The new Edge's interior, according to Ford, presents a cleaner design with tighter and more consistent panel seams for a more premium look and feel. Ford has also reverted to more conventional audio and climate system controls in versions equipped with MyFord Touch technology.

The 2015 Edge's cabin is larger than before, offering more legroom, headroom, and cargo space. Behind the rear seat, the Edge supplies 39.2 cu. ft. of volume. Fold the rear seat down and the Edge carries 73.4 cu. ft. of cargo.

Ford says the new Edge is quieter than ever, thanks in part to a standard acoustic laminated windshield. The Edge Sport is equipped with Active Noise Cancellation technology, while the Titanium trim level can be optioned with acoustic side glass.

Optional Features

With Ford summarizing the new 2015 Edge as "a showcase of innovation," it's fair to say this new crossover SUV is available with a long list of upgrades. This early in the product reveal cycle, however, and aside from the safety and technology details shared further below, the only upgrades Ford has confirmed are leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, hands-free power rear liftgate, and a panoramic Vista Roof.

Under the Hood

The 2015 Ford Edge is equipped with a standard 2.0-liter, EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine employing a new twin-scroll turbocharger to reduce turbo lag, as well as other changes designed to improve fuel economy. An automatic start/stop system will be offered as an option to further boost mpg ratings. Preliminarily, Ford says this EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine will produce 245 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Edge Sport will get a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, the same one offered in the redesigned 2015 Ford F-150. The engine uses a compacted graphite iron cylinder block for added strength, allowing it to generate what Ford expects will be more than 300 horsepower. The Edge Sport also has a sport-tuned suspension for greater handling capabilities.

A 3.5-liter V-6 is available for all versions of this new crossover except the Edge Sport. Ford has not revealed whether this familiar corporate workhorse of an engine will receive significant changes, or what kind of horsepower it will generate.

All three engines will be bolted to a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and the transmission offers Drive and Sport modes. Front-wheel drive is standard, and the optional all-wheel-drive system is a full-time, on-demand setup that can send up to 100% of the engine's power to the Edge's rear wheels.

When it comes to safety, every 2015 Edge is equipped with a new active glove box knee air bag, reversing camera, and Curve Control technology designed to help reduce understeer and tighten a cornering line.

Available safety-related upgrades include a blind-spot information system, lane-departure warning system, cross-traffic alert system, and an adaptive cruise control system with collision warning and brake support technologies. Additionally, buyers can outfit the new Edge with inflatable rear seat belts and a new 180-degree front camera with a washer system.

With the 2015 Edge, Ford expands availability of its Sync and MyFord Touch system to more trim levels. Front and rear park-assist sensors are available, now enhanced with available side parking sensors designed to guide a driver into a perpendicular parking space. They're part of an Enhanced Active Park Assist system that can steer the Edge into a parallel parking space while the driver operates the foot pedals.

The new Edge is also the first Ford model to get new adaptive steering technology similar to what BMW has offered in its products for nearly a decade. Standard for the Edge Sport and optional on the Titanium trim level, the adaptive steering changes the ratio between driver input at the wheel and the degree to which the front wheels turn. In effect, small inputs at low speeds can have greater effect for parking, while at higher speeds the steering provides more stable and precise steering response.
