  • Cooper Hardtop is completely redesigned
  • Longer, wider, taller, lighter, roomier than previous model
  • More powerful, more fuel efficient
  • New infotainment and safety systems

The 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop is completely redesigned, retaining its iconic appearance while improving in terms of performance, fuel economy, safety, technology, and comfort, according to Mini. Only the Cooper Hardtop is new for 2014. Other Cooper-based Mini models continue for the 2014 model year on the previous platform.

Exterior Features

Boasting a coefficient of drag measuring 0.28 Cd, the 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop looks familiar thanks to its hexagonal grille, round headlights, black roof pillars, contrast-color top, and chrome-ringed taillights. The new 2014 Cooper is slightly longer, wider, and taller than the car it replaces, and is equipped with greater wheelbase and track width measurements.

As has always been the case, the new Mini Cooper can be tailored to specific buyer tastes through a variety of paint, trim, wheel choices, and accessories.

Interior Features

With the redesigned Cooper, Mini aims to improve passenger space. New front seats offer a greater range of seat track travel, and rear passengers benefit from extra room. Cargo volume has also increased, and the new Cooper offers a Storage package that includes an adjustable cargo floor. A variety of seat coverings is available, including both fabric and leather, as well as numerous interior trim panels and ways to personalize the Cooper's cabin.

Instrumentation retains the familiar speedometer display mounted to the steering column, complemented by a large round display in the center of the car's dashboard. For 2014, an optional 8.8-inch color display screen is used to operate Mini Connected services, the available navigation system, the extra-cost premium audio system, and more. Also, note that the power window switches have been moved from the dashboard to the door panels.

Optional Features

In addition to upgrades mentioned above, the new 2014 Cooper can be fitted with LED headlights and taillights, LED fog lights, LED interior lighting, and heated exterior mirrors with anti-dazzle glass and a power folding feature. Aluminum wheel upgrades range to 18 inches in diameter, and the Cooper is offered with a power sunroof, Comfort Access passive entry with push-button starting, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, head-up display, and Park Distance Control parking sensors. A Driving Assistant option adds a number of safety-related features, described below.

Under the Hood

The standard 2014 Cooper model is equipped with a turbocharged, 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine rated to make 134 horsepower and 162 lb.-ft. of torque (170 lb.-ft. with the overboost function active). Mini says that the new car accelerates to 60 mph in less than 8 seconds, and that the optional 6-speed automatic transmission delivers slightly quicker performance than the standard 6-speed manual gearbox.

The Cooper S has a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 189 horsepower from 4,700 rpm to 6,200 rpm, and 207 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,250 rpm and 4,750 rpm (221 lb.-ft with overboost). It takes fewer than 7 seconds to get to 60 mph, with the automatic transmission proving quicker, according to Mini. The Cooper S also gets a sport suspension and larger 16-inch aluminum wheels, compared with the standard Cooper.

In addition to delivering more performance, the new Cooper models are claimed to be more fuel-efficient. Each is equipped with Green, Mid, and Sport driving modes, which help to calibrate throttle response, steering effort, shift points for the automatic transmission, and the Dynamic Damper Control suspension that is an option for the Cooper S model. When the Cooper has the optional 6-speed automatic or 6-speed Sports Automatic transmission, the engine is decoupled from the drivetrain when the Cooper is coasting in Green mode, thus saving fuel.

As an option, the 2014 Mini Cooper can be equipped with Driving Assistant technologies including an active cruise control system with collision warning, a pedestrian warning system with initial braking functionality, high-beam headlight assistant, and road sign detection capability. Additionally, the Cooper can be optioned with a reversing camera and a parking-assist system.

With the new Mini Cooper, you'll never need to be disconnected from your network thanks to Mini Connected services and apps. Highlights include access to Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Glympse, and the system offers Emergency Calling to help speed rescuers to the scene of an accident. Numerous Internet radio stations are available through the system, and owners can even receive RSS news feeds via Mini Connected.
