The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan and Wagon receive a thorough update, equipped with revised exterior styling, new safety technologies, a new diesel engine option, and more.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, executive vice president, Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars, said: "We are setting clear trends in terms of safety, design and efficiency with the new E-Class. It puts many technical innovations on the road and undoubtedly is the best E-Class ever."

This preview covers updates for the standard E-Class models. Details about the 2014 Mercedes E63 AMG Sedan and 2014 Mercedes E63 AMG Wagon will be available closer to the car's official unveiling at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

Exterior Features

When the current E-Class Sedan debuted for the 2010 model year, it retained its signature 4-lamp front styling, which has been a hallmark of the mid-luxury sedan since the 1996 model year, while adding heritage body side sculpting designed to recall the "pontoon" fenders of the 1950s. Both of these historical elements are eliminated for the 2014 model.

In their place are single-lens lighting clusters and revised styling and trim elements that are intended to make the new 2014 E-Class look longer, wider and more elegant. The new headlights incorporate partial-LED low-beam headlights and running lights, while horizontal LED taillights and a redesigned rear bumper are new.

For 2014, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers Luxury and Sport trim lines that are visually distinguished from one another. The 2014 E-Class Luxury model is equipped with a traditional grille and stand-up hood ornament, while the E-Class Sport model gets a unique grille with a large, embedded three-pointed star. The E-Class Sport model also has larger front air intakes, sport suspension, 15mm lower ride height, and twin exposed exhaust outlets.

Interior Features

The new 2014 E-Class Sedan and Wagon receive a new "3-tube" gauge cluster, redesigned radio controls, new air vents, and an analog clock for the dashboard. New two-part trim extends across the car's dashboard, rendered in Burl Walnut or Black Ash wood.

Standard equipment includes Bluetooth hands-free calling, Weatherband radio with a CD/DVD player, SD memory card slot, and a 7-inch high-resolution display operated using a central COMAND controller. A separate color display appears in the gauge cluster.

Optional Features

The new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered with a Premium 1 package including a reversing camera, navigation system, premium surround-sound audio system with satellite radio, universal garage door opener, heated front seats, and active ventilated front seats.

A Lighting package adds, among other items, full LED lighting. The Keyless Go package includes passive keyless entry, electronic trunk closer, and hands-free access to the trunk, which allows the trunk to be opened or closed by holding your foot underneath the bumper.

Additional option packages include a Driver Assistance package, Parking Assist package, Lane Tracking package, Wood Trim package, and a Wheel package.

Under the Hood

A new 2014 Mercedes E250 BlueTec model replaces the previous E350 BlueTec model. It is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.1-liter 4-cylinder clean diesel engine generating 190 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the same engine that is offered in the new 2013 Mercedes GLK250 BlueTec and, as in the crossover SUV, it can be paired with 4Matic all-wheel drive in the updated 2014 E-Class.

The 2014 Mercedes E350 models are equipped with the same 3.5-liter V-6 that is installed in today's E350, generating 302 horsepower and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is optional on E350 Sedans and standard on E350 Wagons.

The 2014 Mercedes E550 models have the same twin-turbocharged, 4.6-liter V-8 engine and 4Matic all-wheel drive as before, generating 402 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Mercedes E400 Hybrid also continues, pairing an electric assist motor with the E350's 3.5-liter V-6 engine to boost fuel-economy figures to 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, according to the automaker.

All 2014 E-Class engines are paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission with a Direct Select gearshift lever and shifter paddles mounted to the steering wheel. A new "short-term M mode" automatically puts the E-Class back into fuel-saving automatic mode after a pre-determined period of time elapses with no manual shift input from the driver.

Additionally, all 2014 E-Class Sedans and Wagons are equipped with electric Direct Steer speed-sensitive, variable-ratio steering. The E-Class Luxury models have a suspension configured for a comfortable ride, while the E-Class Sport models get a sport-tuned suspension.

Mercedes-Benz is calling the suite of technology features now offered for the 2014 E-Class "Intelligent Drive" and says it represents where "comfort and safety merge into one." According to the automaker, new "state-of-the-art" sensors and their associated algorithms form the basis of 11 new or "optimized" driver assistance systems making their world debut on the 2014 E-Class Sedan and Wagon.

Several of these features are combined into the optional Driver Assistance package. This package includes Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, which helps the driver keep the E-Class centered in its lane and semi-autonomously follows traffic ahead. Active Lane Keeping Assist is also a part of this package, preventing the E-Class from colliding with surrounding vehicles or obstacles. The Brake Assist Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist boosts braking power when it detects people or traffic crossing in front of the E-Class, while Pre-Safe Brake autonomously brakes for pedestrians or obstacles. This system also includes Pre-Safe Plus, which prepares the cabin for a rear-impact collision and, if the E-Class is stationary when hit, applies the brakes to prevent the car from skidding into other vehicles.

Additional safety options for the 2014 E-Class include Adaptive High-Beam Assist Plus, which provides continuous anti-glare high-beam headlight operation; Active Parking Assist, which steers and brakes the car when parking in both parallel and perpendicular spaces; and a Surround View Camera with a top-down, 360-degree view of the E-Class and its surroundings.

Standard safety equipment includes Collision Prevention Assist, Adaptive Brake Assist, and an improved-for-2014 Attention Assist system offering a greater range of sensitivity that can be adjusted by the driver.

Key to the success of Intelligent Drive components, a new Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera system is located on the windshield near the rearview mirror. Two cameras are set at 45-degree angles to produce a three-dimensional view of the area within 55 yards of the front of the car, with an overall "sight" range of 550 yards.

This system can identify pedestrians crossing in front of the car, oncoming vehicles ahead, vehicles that are crossing in front of the E-Class, and vehicles that the E-Class is following. "Intelligent algorithms" continuously process this data, taking into consideration their speed and position, to inform many of the new safety features offered for the E-Class.

The updated E-Class is also equipped with a new Multi-Mode Radar sensor system to improve those features dependent on radar sensing.
