Introduction

With styling inspired by the larger and more expensive CLS-Class, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is a compact 4-door coupe based on the Concept Style Coupe concept vehicle. When the new Mercedes CLA-Class goes on sale in September of 2013, the automaker will offer a CLA250 model with front-wheel drive and a CLA45 AMG model with 4Matic all-wheel drive. After the car's arrival, a performance-tuned CLA45 AMG 4Matic model is planned.

Exterior Features

Mercedes-Benz claims that the CLA-Class carries the exterior styling from the Concept Style Coupe concept vehicle into production nearly intact. Calling its new creation a "style rebel," Mercedes cites the larger and more expensive CLS-Class as inspiration for the CLA's design.

Featuring a mixture of convex and concave surface details, as well as frameless doors, the CLA250 achieves a 0.23 coefficient of drag, a world record for production vehicles, according to the manufacturer. The CLA250 is equipped with standard 17-inch aluminum wheels with run-flat tires and LED running lights.

Interior Features

Inside, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class offers seating for 4 passengers. A standard 5.8-inch display screen sits atop round air vents, and the CLA250 comes standard with Bluetooth connectivity, Mbrace 2 smartphone integration and telematics service, and Anthracite cabin trim.

Optional Features

According to Mercedes, the new 2014 CLA250 will be offered with four option packages and a handful of separate options.

The Premium package includes a premium surround-sound audio system with an iPod interface and satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, compass, and a universal garage door opener. The Multi-Media package adds a 7-inch display screen, voice-recognition technology, navigation system, reversing camera, 10 GB music hard drive, CD/DVD changer, and SD card slot.

In addition to these two option packages, a panoramic glass sunroof is also available, as is an autonomous parking assist system, along with a range of interior trim selections that include Burl Walnut wood, Black Ash wood, and aluminum. An optional Sport package includes 18-inch AMG-sourced aluminum wheels, perforated front brake discs, sport body styling kit, and accent stripes on the front seats. A Driver Assistance package adds Distronic adaptive cruise control, Blind Spot Assist system, and a Lane Keeping Assist system.Under the HoodThe 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. A standard Eco Stop/Start system shuts off the engine while the vehicle is idling in traffic or at an intersection.

A 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission is standard, feeding power to the CLA250's front wheels. A 4Matic all-wheel-drive system with fully variable torque distribution is included on the CLA250 4Matic model.

The 2014 CLA250 is equipped with a standard sport suspension and electromechanical steering. The steering system includes assistance features to correct vehicle oversteer and understeer situations, as well as to compensate for crosswinds, road gradient, split-friction braking, and torque-steer.

Safety

The 2014 Mercedes CLA-Class is equipped with standard Attention Assist technology, which is designed to recognize when a driver might be drowsy or distracted. Collision Prevention Assist is also standard on the CLA250, a radar-based braking system that provides visual and audible warnings of potential collisions to the driver, primes the Brake Assist system to initiate full power braking when the driver steps on the pedal, and, if a collision cannot be avoided, automatically brakes the car and makes best use of available space to minimize impact force.

The CLA250 model's optional Driver Assistance package adds Distronic adaptive cruise control, Blind Spot Assist, and Lane Keeping Assist technology.

Technology

The 2014 Mercedes CLA-Class is equipped with a standard cloud-based Mbrace 2 smartphone integration and telematics system. An optional Parktronic with Advanced Parking Assist system can autonomously park the CLA-Class in a parallel or perpendicular parking space.

Let's look at how to know when you need new brakes.Look, listenThere are two ways to check for brake wear on disc brakes: by looking and by listening. First, check for wear by looking at your brake pads through the spaces between the wheel's spokes. The outside pad will be pressed against a metal rotor. Generally, there should be at least 1/4 inch of pad. If you see less than 1/4 inch of pad, you may want to have your brake pads inspected or replaced.
