The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the redesigned 2022 Honda Civic a “Top Safety Pick+” overall safety rating, putting the car in an elite position among small cars. The only other models to achieve this rating are the Honda Insight, Mazda Mazda3 (hatchback and sedan), and Subaru Crosstrek. The IIHS says the safety rating applies to both the 2022 Civic hatchback and the 2022 Civic sedan.
Based on the IIHS testing, the new Civic earns the highest-possible score across all categories, including crashworthiness, crash avoidance and mitigation, and child seat anchors.
Honda equips every 2022 Civic with its Honda Sensing collection of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). The automaker updates this package for the new Civic, switching to a new wide-angle camera and next-generation software.

Additionally, Honda installs LED headlights with automatic high-beam headlights on every new Civic, and the car’s underlying structure employs the latest thinking related to the automaker’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) philosophy.
Ten airbags are standard, including front knee and rear side-impact airbags for the first time. The new Civic also features a new front-airbag design that Honda says will cradle the driver’s and front passenger’s heads and reduce rotational head movements in an oblique, or angled and off-center, collision. Honda also improves the seat belts and includes a standard rear seat belt reminder that informs the driver when a passenger isn’t buckled up.
A blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic warning is another significant safety improvement for the 2022 Civic, replacing the previous-generation car’s Lane Watch technology, a distracting system that worked only on the right side of the vehicle. However, you’ll need to upgrade to EX or Touring trim levels to get it.
Considering that Honda expects the base LX and the sporty Sport trims to be its bestsellers, the automaker should reconsider this limitation and make the blind-spot warning system available to a broader number of Civic buyers.
