A car engine is a piece of heavy machinery, and it isn’t surprising for it to make all kinds of sounds. The rotating shafts, the moving pistons and valves, the combustion process, and other engine parts in motion are responsible for various sounds and noises. You can hear multiple sounds like humming, screeching, clicking, and clunking.
Car engines have rotating and reciprocating components. Worn-out accessories and bad bearings would make a whining or whirring sound. A problem with one of the reciprocating components, such as pistons, valves, rods, or pushrods, usually makes clunking, clicking, or ticking noise.
The engine is bound to make noises due to its several moving components. Most of these sounds are not very loud and aren’t a cause for concern. The engine might also make sounds due to the noisy fuel injector, a portable electric valve. There are multiple injectors in your car, but they sound more like a buzz than a distant tick.
Low oil pressure might be the cause of those ticking sounds. When vital engine components don’t get adequate lubrication, it might cause other problems, and the engine starts to make these noises.
A broken valve train component, such as lifters or cam followers, can also cause ticking, tapping, or clicking sounds. A broken valve spring or a worn-out camshaft lobe might be the reason behind these noises because of the excessive movement inside the engine.
Yet another cause behind the ticking sound can be an exhaust manifold leak which sometimes disappears when the engine warms up and the metal expands.
Let’s take a look at some other causes:
All of the things described above may cause the tickling sound to appear. While some of them are more concerning than others, you should do some research to be informed. Combine that with regular maintenance, and the sound may not even appear.
Plus, you can save more on your mechanic and service station visits by understanding your car better. Becoming knowledgeable about car-related things helps to distinguish between the noises you need to worry about and the noises caused by the regular workings of the vehicle to understand whether the situation requires certain measures to be taken.
