What is Lincoln Co-Pilot 360?

Christian Wardlaw | May 04, 2020

In the summer of 2019, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released a study showing the effectiveness of different kinds of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS). Depending on the technology, they proved between 11% and 78% effective at reducing crashes, and between 21% and 56% effective at reducing crashes with injuries. Seemingly pointing out the obvious, the IIHS concluded: “Lower crash rates are a clear benefit of these technologies.

Lincoln Co-Pilot 360

Consumers looking for a luxury vehicle might want to note that Lincoln includes nearly all of the systems studied by the IIHS as standard equipment in a package of ADAS called Lincoln Co-Pilot 360.

What is Lincoln Co-Pilot 360?

Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 is standard equipment for all Lincoln models, and includes a backup camera, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and a driver monitoring system. Lincoln owners can choose to use all or some of these systems and can program alert and response sensitivity to personal preferences.

With a single exception, this collection of ADAS includes all of the technologies cited as effective at reducing collisions by the IIHS. The one missing from the standard Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 suite is automatic reverse braking, which the automaker supplies in the Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 Plus group of safety systems.

What is Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 Plus?

Available as an option on the Lincoln Aviator, Corsair, and Nautilus models, Co-Pilot 360 Plus is an enhancement to the standard package of ADAS.

The core of the Co-Pilot 360 Plus upgrade is an adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go capability and lane centering assistance. Though it qualifies as a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving aid, these systems are not as sophisticated as Cadillac Super Cruise. This means the driver is expected to keep her hands on the steering wheel in addition to remaining attentive, ready to take full control at a moment’s notice.

Additionally, depending on the model, Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 Plus includes traffic jam assistance to make brutal commutes easier, evasive steering assistance to support a driver making a sudden maneuver to avoid an obstacle, an automatic speed sign recognition system that tells the adaptive cruise control system when to slow or accelerate, a surround-view camera system, and the aforementioned automatic reverse braking system.

What is Lincoln Active Park Assist Plus?

Active parking assistance is another element of Lincoln Co-Pilot360 Plus. Called Active Park Assist Plus, this technology can take full control of the vehicle while parking in parallel or perpendicular parking spaces.

The driver asks the technology to find a suitable parking spot, and when it identifies a space the driver puts the vehicle in neutral gear and activates Active Park Assist Plus. From that point on, the technology takes complete control of the transmission, steering, brakes, and accelerator, autonomously parking the Lincoln in the desired space. The driver must remain in the driver’s seat and be ready to take control if necessary.

Which Lincolns Have Co-Pilot 360 Plus?

For now, only the Lincoln Aviator, Lincoln Corsair, and Lincoln Nautilus offer Co-Pilot 360 Plus, and the full collection of systems is restricted to the newest of these SUVs, the Aviator and Corsair. As the company redesigns or updates existing vehicles and introduces new ones, look for broader availability of Lincoln Co-Pilot 360 Plus.
