Imagine never touching your wheels on the curb again. With four cameras creating a virtual 360° bird's-eye view of your car and on-screen views of the front, rear, and side, it is not a problem to park your vehicle even in the most cramped space. The system called Intelligent Around View Monitor will also inform you about moving objects near your car. By whom and when was it invented? What cares are equipped with it? Let’s find out.

One of the pioneers in the popularization of in-car camera vision systems was Nissan. In 2007, it introduced the Around View Monitor, a set of four 180-degree video cameras that gave the driver a bird's-eye view of the car and its surroundings, in two models – Nissan Elgrand and Infiniti EX. At about the same time, Mitsubishi Motors and Honda implemented similar functionality as the Multi-around monitor system for the Delica and Multi-View Camera System for the Odyssey, respectively.
Intelligent Around View® is an improved version of that one. Now, four 360-degree cameras display views of the vehicle from different angles, allowing the driver to quickly understand the car’s location in space and assist in parking. Like in the previous version, the system can detect objects around the car and warns of the need to maneuver when parking or leaving the parking space.
In reality, you will hear a beep and see a warning light in the direction of the object. A flashing green and then a yellow light may appear on the dashboard, which means the object is getting closer. These colors help you keep the distance between your vehicle and another object. Note that the first green line designates an object approximately 7 feet away, and the second designates an object at a distance of around 10 feet. Then there is the yellow line, which indicates that the object is approximately 3 feet away, and the red line, at 1.5 feet.
Apart from the IAV, there are also Blind Sport Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert technologies. The first monitors blind spots and warns you of vehicles you can't see so that you can change lanes safely and calmly. With Rear Cross Traffic Alert, sensors around the rear warn you of approaching vehicles from either side. It's like having eyes in the back of your head.
The following models are equipped with the IAV technology: Sentra, with the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) starting at $19,950, Altima ($25,290), Nissan LEAF ($28,040), Maxima ($38,140), GT-R ($113,540), Kicks ($20,290), Rogue Sport™ ($24,960), Rogue ($27,360), Murano ($33,660), Pathfinder ($35,000), ARIYA ($43,190), Armada ($50,400), Frontier ($29,190), TITAN ($39,700), and TITAN® XD ($47,340).
Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor is related to a broader term known as Omniview technology. Early parking assistance products used proximity sensors or a single rearview camera to get information about obstacles and provide drivers with an audible alarm or rearview video. Such products had drawbacks: the alarms were not intuitive, and the rearview camera had a blind spot. However, the Omniview technology solved these problems.
The overall all-around view system used four cameras with a wide field of view; one in the front of the vehicle, one in the rear, one in the left rearview mirror, and one in the right outside mirror. Four cameras cover the entire area around the car. The system synthesizes an image of the bird's-eye view in front of the vehicle through distortion correction, projection conversion, and image fusion.
The Intelligent Around View Monitor is a technology introduced by Nissan, which helps the driver to see the surroundings of their car and avoid accidents. It is possible thanks to four 360-degree cameras displaying the view of the vehicle from different angles. The technology is available on some Nissan models. Other car manufacturers also introduce similar systems but under a different name and on expensive top-of-the-range models, such as Volvo S90 with its Park Assist Pilot, Kia’s Stinger, Range Rover’s SVAutobiography Dynamic, and others. If your car doesn’t have the 360-cameras feature, you can have it installed for an additional price.
