What Are Paddle Shifters?

Dustin Hawley | Dec 06, 2022

Many cars nowadays are manufactured with automatic transmissions. Manual is not as comfortable as its counterpart, but it doesn’t necessarily stop consumers from liking the authentic driving experience.

What are paddle shifters

That is why most automatic cars have paddle shifters. They come in handy for those who miss manuals and provide great control over your vehicle without any kind of sacrifice in terms of convenience.

While there’s not a lot to discuss when it comes to these shifters, it is nice to know you have options when driving an automatic vehicle.

Automatic transmission

This automatic transmission uses a torque converter, planetary gearset, and clutches to shift through the vehicle’s gears automatically. Some allow the driver some control over the process, but you are mostly stuck with neutral, forward, and reverse modes.

You must pick from the familiar P-R-N-D-L choices on the selector whenever an auto stick is involved. It drastically simplifies the process and allows inexperienced drivers to get the basics quickly.

However, the mechanical complexity plays a significant disadvantage. Whenever your auto stick breaks, the repairs become costly. Plus, you have less control over speed, so your fuel economy won’t be as efficient.

What Are Paddle Shifters?

Paddle shifters are buttons or levers on the back of your auto’s steering column or the steering wheel itself. They let you manually override an automatic transmission’s pre-programmed points and shift into a particular gear.

They initially gained traction after being used in race cars. Paddle shifters increased the overall speed and helped reduce the transmission strain. They are popular and used in Hondas, Fords, and many other rides.

Purpose Of Paddle Shifters

The way paddle shifters function is pretty straightforward. Instead of changing gears with a clutch pedal, they allow the driver to select gears manually. Automatic transmission is programmed to do so, but you have the added pleasure of doing it yourself.

They are usually marked by +/- or Up/Down. One paddle upshifts and the other downshifts. Changes happen one at a time, and the general speed depends on your car model. Canceling this override involves holding the paddle (usually right, upshift paddle shift) for a couple of seconds, and after that, you’ll return to automatic mode.

The fail-safes installed within this mechanism will always protect you against sudden or immediate shifts, preventing powertrain damage and over-revving. This means that you can’t shift from the fifth gear to the first while going 50 mph. Even if you do it by mistake, the computer will react promptly.

Advantages Of Paddle Shifters

As paddle shifters have no real disadvantages apart from mistakes a driver can make, they serve as a great addition. They give you more control over your driving experience and allow you to override programming and react to certain situations accordingly.

When you make a turn and use a paddle shifter to change into a lower gear, it ensures more torque and speed. When you go on a downhill road, clicking the left paddle shifter can slow down the auto without using the brakes. If you go uphill, you can quickly downshift with a high revolution with the left paddle shifter to ensure you have enough power when the slope gets tough. You can also upshift to get your automobile out of the snow faster and downshift to slow your car down without using the brakes in heavy rain, ensuring you have more control over your vehicle. Despite significant technical progress in automatic transmissions, they sometimes have difficulty reading the road under severe weather conditions. In such a case, paddle shifters play the role of perfect backups.

Summary

Paddle shifters are a great way to give the driver more control over the vehicle. They are a great addition to cars with automatic transmissions and provide no downsides while making driving more convenient.

With them installed, you can efficiently react to any road situation accordingly, and if you accidentally make a mistake, fail-safes will always prevent any damage. However, you should still use them properly to avoid imposing financial burdens on yourself. All in all, that’s all there is to say about paddle shifters.
