Hyundai Makes Additional Donations in Support of Covid-19 Coronavirus Drive-Thru Testing

Beverly Braga | Apr 14, 2020

Today, Hyundai announced additional U.S. response to the coronavirus pandemic. Through its nonprofit Hyundai Hope On Wheels, a contribution of $300,000 was made to Montgomery, Alabama, to be split between the children’s hospital ($200,000) and city ($100,000). The state also will receive 10,000 RT-PCR tests for drive-thru testing procedures. Detroit was also a recent recipient of Hyundai’s efforts, last week accepting $100,000 and 10,000 RT-PCR tests.

Hyundai Makes Additional Donations in Support of Covid-19 Drive-Thru Testing

In the last 3 weeks, the automaker has awarded $4 million in grants specifically toward the fight against COVID-19. A previous announcement included $2.2 million to 11 medical facilities throughout the country. Each is a Hyundai Hope on Wheels-partner pediatric cancer hospital and received an equal $200,000 share.

The donated total of RT-PCR tests is now up to 65,000 for 22 drive-thru testing locations nationwide, making Hyundai the first automaker to provide the critical supplies, particularly to high-risk cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and New Orleans. The supplied RT-PCR tests are developed by Seegene Technologies, a South Korea-based leader in molecular diagnotics. Its tests simultaneously detect three genes (N, E, and RdRP) of the virus responsible for COVID-19 with results available within 4 hours.

Because testing centers are funded by the hospitals themselves, the urgent financial support these donations provide is integral during a time-sensitive global health crisis such as the coronavirus. The Hyundai Hope on Wheels organization is dedicated to funding research and creating awareness for pediatric cancer. Children, especially those with compromised immune systems, are at a higher risk of contracting the viral disease.
