How Do You Reset The Maintenance Required Light On A Toyota Sienna?

Dustin Hawley | Feb 02, 2023

All modern vehicles come with various useful systems installed. Things like cruise control help drivers keep peace of mind on the road, while ESC helps prevent slippage and ensure your safety. But there’s even more to vehicles, as vehicles can also remind owners when it’s time to do some maintenance.

How Do You Reset The Maintenance Required Light On A Toyota Sienna

Most brands like Nissan or Toyota include maintenance reminder systems in all their vehicles. They vary in design and interface but perform the same function. However, everyone gets nervous when a wrench icon or brightly-colored light illuminates on the dashboard, so let’s get into it and alleviate your concerns.

What Is The Maintenance Light?

In Toyotas, the maintenance light appears on your dashboard as “MAINT REQD”, and tends to remain on permanently. But there’s nothing to worry about, as it just reminds you to change the motor oil.

Generally, it will turn on approximately every 5,000 miles. It is directly tied to the odometer and waits until it counts the appropriate distance traveled. But there’s one small catch: you must reset the light yourself.

Of course, you can easily do it, but the method will depend on your model. So, to cover all possible situations, instructions for all relatively recent Toyota Sienna generations will be provided below.

Toyota Sienna First Generation (1997-2003)

Even the earliest Sienna generation had the base version of this system installed. Here, you need to do the following to reset the light:

  • Turn on the ignition, but make sure the engine is not on.
  • Use the trip knob and a small display on the dashboard. Navigate the menus until you find the odometer reading.
  • Turn off the ignition, and press and hold the trip button.
  • Now turn the ignition back on. The display will then show “-” signs that will disappear until the original odometer reading is shown.
  • You’ve reset the light and can let go of the ODO knob.

Toyota Sienna Second Generation (2003-2010)

The second generation follows the pattern of the first. You need to use the odometer knob and the display to do the reset. Here are the steps:

  • Turn on the ignition and wait for the instrument panel to light up.
  • Navigate the menu with the knob until you locate the odometer reading.
  • Turn off the ignition.
  • Press and hold the knob until the ignition goes back on.
  • When the odometer reading flashes zero, you’ve successfully done the reset.

Toyota Sienna Third Generation (2010-2020)

This generation was the most successful to date. As the minivan became popular, the production life lasted for ten years. Because this generation is relatively recent, you may still be in your warranty period, so make sure you can reset the light without voiding it. If everything checks out, do the following:

  • Turn on the ignition or the engine.
  • Navigate the center display by using the button on the speedometer.
  • Once you locate the odometer menu, turn the ignition off.
  • Press and hold the trip button. Keep pressing it until the last step.
  • Press the ignition button once, then wait for the Engine Start procedure to appear.
  • Press and hold the ignition button until the light disappears.
  • Release the trip and ignition buttons.

Toyota Sienna Fourth Generation (2020-Present)

The latest generation Siennas are the easiest to reset. You just need to use navigation controls on the right instrument cluster of the steering wheel and the center display. However, as with the third-generation models, you must be careful with the warranty. Aside from that, here’s how to reset the light:

  • Set on the ignition, but don’t start the engine.
  • Wait for the Sienna logo to appear on the display.
  • Navigate the menus with the steering wheel controls until you find Maintenance Reset.
  • Select it with the central button. If you misclick, simply press the back button in the same cluster.
  • Press “Yes” from the menu prompt to reset the maintenance light.

Summary

Remember that the light will remain on until you reset it. There are no two ways about it, and you must simply follow the instructions provided to resolve the issue. However, be careful if you’re in the warranty period, as there are always small details in the fine print. Other than that, the information given should help you reset the light properly with no additional problems.
