How Can I Clean A Car Battery Acid Spill?

Dustin Hawley | Apr 04, 2023

Battery spills are dangerous, primarily when discussing high-powered battery systems, such as those used in commercial and industrial gadgets and machinery. Since liquid and residue from car batteries may be harmful to the skin, clothing, and equipment, it's essential to recognize the sort of battery you're working with to prevent creating dangerous chemical reactions by using the correct cleaning solution.

How Сan I Сlean A Car Battery Acid Spill

The chemicals that spill from batteries can hurt more than just your skin. These toxic compounds can damage your lungs and eyes if breathed in. So, before touching batteries with acid, wear gloves, safety goggles, and a face mask when working with higher-power batteries, such as lithium batteries. The gloves you use should be from rubber, latex, or nitrile.

No, let’s discuss the batteries themselves.

Types Of Car Batteries

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Some cars, primarily electric or hybrid vehicles, have lithium batteries. Typically, their voltages are multiples of 3 to 3.7V. They can also be found in rechargeable portable gadgets.

Because of their high energy per unit mass compared to other electrical energy storage systems, you can find lithium-ion batteries in cell phones and laptops. They also feature a high power-to-weight ratio, high-temperature performance, and low self-discharge. Most lithium-ion battery components can be recycled.

Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries

Nickel-metal hydride batteries, commonly used in computer and medical equipment, provide adequate energy and power. Nickel-metal hydride batteries have a significantly longer life cycle than lead-acid batteries and are safer and more resistant to damage.

These batteries are common in Hybrid vehicles. The primary difficulties with nickel-metal hydride batteries are their high costs, excessive self-discharge, heat generation at high temperatures, and hydrogen loss.

Lead-Acid Batteries

Lead-acid batteries are high-capacity, cheap, safe, and durable. However, their usage is restricted by low specific energy, poor cold-temperature performance, and a limited lifetime. Advanced high-power lead-acid batteries exist, although they are only used for additional loads in commercially available electric-drive cars.

Cleaning The Spills Safely

Leaving acid spills without cleaning is very harmful and dangerous. The following are ways you clean acid spills according to each battery type.

Cleaning Lead-Acid and NiCd Battery Acid Spills

These batteries contain the most dangerous and strong acid, which can burn through fabric, carpets, and metal. So take particular care when cleaning spills from them.

Preparing For Cleaning

  • Rubber, nitrile, or latex gloves
  • Safety face mask and goggles
  • Two thick bags for the battery
  • Baking soda to neutralize and clean the battery acid
  • Water

Cleaning Process

  • Work with caution by wearing safety clothing and working in a well-ventilated area. If you touch battery acid, it can harm the skin and be dangerous to the lungs if breathed in. To clean battery acid properly, you must use rubber, nitrile, or latex gloves, safety goggles, and a face mask.
  • Place the battery in two bags. Tie the bags up quickly after placing the battery inside.
  • Use baking soda to neutralize the acid in lead-acid or nickel-cadmium batteries. Sprinkle baking soda over the battery acid. Cover them entirely with baking soda until there is no more bubbling. If the battery is damaged, throw enough baking soda into the bag to neutralize the battery acid.
  • Using baking soda and water, create a mixture and clean the battery acid. Then, using a toothbrush, clean away the battery acid.
  • Dispose of the solution in the bag.
  • Dispose of the battery.

Cleaning Lithium Battery Acid Spills

Some cars, notably electric or hybrid vehicles, contain lithium batteries, and even though the process is somewhat similar, there are a few differences.

Preparing For Cleaning

  • Gloves made of rubber, nitrile, or latex
  • Safety goggles
  • Face mask
  • Water Towel

Cleaning Process

  • Wear protective equipment and work in a well-ventilated area to ensure your safety.
  • Lithium batteries are sensitive and often explode. So, use two plastic bags or a container to store the battery. Place the battery between two large plastic bags. Once it is inside, immediately seal the plastic bags. You must contact the manufacturer for suitable handling instructions if the battery is damaged.
  • Use water to neutralize and clean the lithium battery acid. Take a towel and soak it in water. Then use it to clean up any battery acid spillage.
  • With caution, dispose of the towel used to clean the spillage. Do not simply toss it in the garbage.
  • Dispose of the battery. You can call your local solid waste or toxic waste authorities for them to do it for you.

Spills of Alkaline Battery Acid

Alkaline batteries are tiny batteries used to power some cars and electrical gadgets. Their voltages are generally around 1.5V, and, once again, the process of cleaning spillage from these has its differences.

Preparing For Cleaning

  • Rubber, Nitrile, or Latex Gloves
  • Safety Goggles
  • Face Mask
  • Vinegar
  • Lemon Juice
  • Cotton Swab
  • Toothbrush
  • Paper Towel

Cleaning Process

  • Maintain a safe and well-ventilated environment. To avoid being exposed to too many dangerous chemicals, clean up the battery acid leak in a well-ventilated area. Put on some safety clothing before cleaning up battery acid leaks.
  • Place the battery in two plastic bags and seal them together. Put the batteries in two large plastic bags to keep them safe. Tie the bags immediately after putting the battery in.
  • Vinegar and lemon juice can neutralize and clean alkaline battery acid, so mix them and make a cleaning solution. Then, dip a cotton wipe into the solution and apply it to the battery acid to neutralize it. You can also use a toothbrush dipped in the solution to clean dried spills. However, don’t use water since it will cause further rusting. Instead, use a paper towel to wipe away the acid.
  • Then, allow the area to dry for several hours.
  • Dispose of the battery. You can call your local solid waste or toxic waste authorities for them to do it for you.

Summary

Battery acid is a dangerous thing to deal with, but if there’s a spillage, you don’t have much choice. Even though this article carefully outlined the general process of cleaning spills from different batteries, don’t clean things up unless you’re confident you can pull it off. Any mistakes made during the process could harm your health or worsen the situation.
