2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Coming to America as VW Invests Billions in Electric Cars

Erin Riches-Wong | Mar 04, 2020

Volkswagen has big plans to build all sorts of new electric cars, but the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 will be the first to arrive in the United States. It's the production version of the I.D. Crozz concept from 2017. Similar in size to the Tiguan crossover, this all-electric Volkswagen SUV should go on sale here in 2021.

Because the VW ID.4 is built on architecture designed expressly for electric vehicles, this compact SUV will feel very different from Volkswagen's previous EV, the e-Golf, which is an electrified version of a regular Golf hatchback. VW engineers didn't have to accommodate a conventional internal combustion engine up front, so the 2022 ID.4's nose is short and its interior should be airy. The ID.4's lithium-ion batteries, which inevitably weigh down electric cars, are integrated into the floor. This packaging lowers the vehicle's center of gravity, and consumers will get a better-handling electric Volkswagen SUV as a result.

Volkswagen will offer both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions of this electric crossover SUV, but most, if not all of the U.S.-bound ID.4s are likely to be AWD. VW is targeting a maximum range of around 310 miles.

Early examples of the Volkswagen ID.4 will roll off the assembly line in Zwickau, Germany. This plant used to crank out vast quantities of Golfs, but Volkswagen Group has remodeled it for EV production as part of its staggering 33 billion Euro (about $38 billion) investment in electric vehicles. Eventually, the automaker hopes to build 330,000 electric VW models annually at this plant, and the company claims the manufacture of each one will be carbon-neutral. In support of that effort, VW has partnered with the Swedish battery cell manufacturer Northvolt in hopes of opening its own battery manufacturing plant in Germany.

Starting in 2022, Volkswagen will also build the ID.4 compact crossover in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where it already assembles the Passat, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport. VW has invested $800 million to expand its U.S. plant for electric vehicle production.

The flexible architecture underneath the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 will spawn a family of electric VW models. The Golf-sized ID.3 hatchback (not for the U.S.) is already in production at the Zwickau plant. In addition, VW is working on both a Microbus-inspired electric van based on the ID. Buzz concept from 2018 and a car based on 2019's ID. Space Vizzion wagon concept. Ford also plans to use Volkswagen's EV architecture to develop electric cars for European customers.
