The Wrangler is Jeep’s most iconic model by a country mile. Still, its tech and performance have lost some of their shine as the newer and more advanced Ford Bronco slowly advances on the off-road market. Jeep has a new Wrangler for 2024 that it hopes will improve its chances in an evolving market. The updated SUV gets revised but traditional exterior styling, a far more comfortable and tech-filled interior, and several new standard and available features.
Jeep offers the Wrangler in several configurations, from the lower-end Sport and Willys to the high-end 4xe plug-in hybrid models. Jeep discontinued the diesel engine option after 2023, but the automaker offers four powertrains for the new 2024 Wrangler model, including a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a V6, a V8, and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
The Wrangler’s exterior look and shape haven’t drastically changed from before, as the SUV retains its classic seven-slotted grille and round headlights. Ten new wheel styles are available with seven new geometries and new colors. There are 10 new exterior colors and updated interior features.
Every 2024 Wrangler gets a unique hand-wrapped instrument panel and dash, which features different etched graphics depending on the trim. Some variants get a mix of recycled materials, each with a unique accent scheme with different colors. The 4xe comes with a dash-mounted state-of-charge indicator, and Jeep offers mounting points on the dash for smartphones, dash cameras, and other equipment.
Everything in the new Wrangler’s interior endured water testing to ensure wet operation when the top is down. Jeep also introduces power front seat adjustments for the first time in a Wrangler. The big rub before was that under-seat electrical components couldn’t handle water fording, but Stellantis says Jeep engineers figured it out for 2024.
Jeep offers four carryover powertrains in the 2024 Wrangler, including the base 3.6-liter V6 engine with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is available that produces 270 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque, and Jeep will continue offering the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 in the new model year. The 4xe powertrain includes a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and electric motors for a combined 375 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque. It also offers 21 miles of all-electric range.
Jeep promises more off-road capability with the new Wrangler. Some configurations get a factory 8,000-pound Warn winch or a heavy-duty Dana 44 Full Float rear axle that enables a 5,000-pound tow rating in the Rubicon trim, which Jeep says is a best-in-class number. The axle also lets buyers upgrade to larger wheel-and-tire packages than the standard setup. Jeep upgraded the base Willys with 33-inch BFGoodrich tires and a rear locking differential.
Jeep promised better safety in the 2024 Wrangler but did not outline the full suite of available equipment. Notably, side curtain airbags now come standard across both rows of seats, which should help the SUV improve on its mixed results in 2022 crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The 2022 Wrangler earned scores ranging from Poor for moderate overlap front crash tests to Good in a few other IIHS categories. Jeep holds back most safety gear in added-cost option packages, such as the $1,195 Advanced Safety Group and $1,395 Safety Group offered for the 2023 model.
The 2024 Wrangler has a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen running Uconnect 5 as standard. Jeep says it features a more robust LED system that prevents reflection and glare, making the screen more viewable. Uconnect 5 is far more powerful than previous systems, bringing features like Amazon Alexa capability and over-the-air updates. Users can customize the interface with personalized home screens and other settings via the profile system.
The automaker notes that many off-road drivers carry additional iPads and smartphones to assist with mapping technology, which was a primary driver for installing the larger display across the board. Jeep partnered with Trails Off-road, which offers pre-loaded trail maps with landmarks, history, and highlights. Mapping with the feature has waypoints along the way with points of interest, and it comes built-in as standard.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with SiriusXM 360L. Jeep also introduces a new 4xe power box, which lets the Wrangler power external devices, such as camp lighting and small cooking equipment. Further increasing cabin luxury, Jeep improved sound insulation and speaker quality to enable clearer cabin communications. Jeep integrated the antenna into the windshield to prevent damage, and the company laminated the Wrangler’s glass to reduce cabin noise.
Though it features more screen than ever, the new Wrangler retains several physical controls for easier use on rugged terrain. The 7-inch gauge cluster offers vehicle status and other information and pairs with the large display.
The Jeep Wrangler’s most direct competitor is the Ford Bronco. The two align in many categories, but the Ford’s independent front suspension gives it better on-road manners. Buyers may also consider the Toyota 4Runner—a more enclosed SUV with serious off-road capabilities.
