2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Flash Preview

The Ford F-150 Lightning wasn’t the first electric truck to market. Still, its arrival has seen strong demand and interest from prospective buyers. Wait times are shortening, however, and the automaker is announcing new variants to keep the demand train rolling. There was the Platinum Black Edition in August 2023, and recently, Ford announced a new F-150 Lightning Flash.

Ford says its new special-edition Lightning focuses on a tech-forward experience, bringing the most popular features from other Lightning variants. Based on the XLT trim level, the F-150 Lightning Flash gets the extended-range battery system, which brings two electric motors with a combined 580 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. Ford pairs it with a 131-kWh battery, and the automaker says fast-charging capabilities can boost range from 15 to 80 percent in just over 40 minutes. The extended battery packs also enable a 320-mile range estimate, Ford says.

The tech-forward package in the F-150 Lightning Flash is robust and includes some of Ford’s most desirable features. The Flash gets a 15.5-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latest version of Ford’s Sync infotainment system improves on previous iterations. It takes advantage of the large display screen with side-by-side apps and enhanced pinch-to-zoom capability, making maps and other apps easier to navigate.

Other standard tech features include an 8-speaker B&O sound system with a subwoofer, Ford’s excellent keyless entry keypad, wireless device charging, and an intelligent access system with push-button start. Ford also includes a towing tech package, which brings Pro Trailer Backup Assist, a trailer brake controller, smart hitch guidance, an onboard scale system, and trailer reverse guidance. The truck also gets a power tailgate with steps for easy bed access. Some improvements seen on the Flash made it to the standard 2024 Lightning, including the keyless access keypad.

Ford is also including Blue Cruise 1.2 on the new Flash. The updated system adds lane-change assistance, allowing the driver to initiate a change simply by using the turn signal. It also centers the truck in its lane, and Ford says it can prevent collisions by moving the Lighting away from other traffic. The downside is that Blue Cruise requires a subscription fee of $800 for a year or $75 per month. Ford says buyers can sign up for the subscription at any time, and the truck comes with a 90-day free trial of the semi-autonomous driving technology.

The truck can access Ford’s BlueOval charging network, which the automaker says has over 84,000 chargers. Ford also signed on with Tesla to offer owners access to its Supercharger network, adding more than 12,000 additional locations. Superchargers are often faster, more reliable, and more conveniently located than third-party chargers, but the system is already taxed, with long wait times the norm in several places.

Ford didn’t keep its low-price promise for the Lightning, and the truck’s starting price lands at $49,995 for the entry-level Pro in 2024. The XLT, upon which Ford bases the new Flash, starts at $57,495. Stepping up to the Flash brings the price to $69,995. While that’s almost $8,000 cheaper than the Lariat trim, top F-150 Lightning variants are far from affordable. The top Lightning Platinum Black version costs $97,995 and can crest six figures with options.
