2023 Chevrolet Colorado Preview

Pickup trucks are among Americans’ favorite vehicles, so it’s no surprise that automakers dedicate significant time, effort, and money to designing and producing products that appeal to buyers. General Motors’ two truck brands, Chevrolet and GMC, combine to sell more full-size units than Ford, but The Blue Oval’s F-150 seems unbeatable in the sales department. The picture isn’t as clear-cut in the midsize truck segment, but Chevy is preparing an update for the Colorado midsize truck that may shift the balance in its favor.

The all-new 2023 Chevrolet Colorado comes in five trim levels: WT (Work Truck), LT, Z71, ZR2, and the new Trail Boss. The trucks pick up fresh styling and shift to a single powertrain with three available outputs.

Though it shares a stable with Chevy’s full-size Silverado 1500, the midsize Colorado pickup doesn’t share styling with its larger sibling. That changes for 2023, as Chevy updates the truck’s exterior with a beefier look that more closely mimics the Silverado. Chevrolet offers a variety of wheel and exterior trim options, ranging from black plastic exterior trim on cheaper variants to chrome and painted black metal accents on more expensive models.

Wheel sizes start at 17 inches, but 18-inch wheels are available. The ZR2 comes with 17-inch wheels and 33-inch tires, while the ZR2 Desert Boss package adds 17-inch beadlock capable wheels. Chevy says the Colorado’s wheels share a bolt pattern with its full-size trucks to increase customization options and parts availability. A new tailgate storage system is available that offers lockable, water-tight storage. The space opens to 45 inches wide and 4 inches deep.

Each of the new Colorado’s trims has a different interior theme, four of which are available. Chevy hasn’t yet broken down all the options but says that, depending on the trim, the truck gets unique features like round outboard air vents. The WT and Trail Boss variants are more basic, while the LT trim adds silver accents and soft-touch trim. The Z71 gets cloth and leatherette seating surfaces, along with black and red accents. Colorado ZR2 trucks have a unique interior color with ZR2 badging and exclusive trim on the physical controls.

Chevy made waves when it updated the Silverado 1500 line to include a 4-cylinder engine, but it proved a capable and useful powertrain option. Now, that same engine is coming to the Colorado with three power output options, depending on the trim.

Chevy dropped the V6 and diesel options from the previous Colorado lineup in favor of a single turbocharged 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine. The WT and LT trims come with 237 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque, which is good enough for 3,500 pounds of towing. The Z71 and Trail Boss come with 310 hp and 390 pound-feet of torque, improving towing to 7,700 pounds. The top ZR2 trim gets 310 hp and 430 pound-feet of torque, and towing remains at 7,700 pounds. The mid-range engine is available in the lower WT and LT trims, but the highest-output engine is only available in the ZR2.

Chevy installs a 2- or 3-inch lift in some trims and says that the truck features a 3.1-inch longer wheelbase than before. In addition to improving interior and bed space, the longer wheelbase should give the Colorado a smoother ride. Several selectable drive modes are also available, including off-road, terrain, Baja, and towing.

A new 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen replaces the previous truck’s 8-inch display. It runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and features Google services. The system is an update of earlier versions seen in Chevy trucks, and the shift to a Google-based interface adds functionality in maps and other apps.

Depending on the trim, the Colorado may get a new Off-Road Performance Display, which allows the driver to track performance, vehicle status, and more. The system gives readouts for several data points, including altitude, GPS guidance, pitch, G-forces, and wheel slip.

Up to 10 camera views are available, including an underbody view for the Z71 and ZR2 trims. A trailering app helps with hitching and other challenges while towing, and the rearview camera provides further hitch guidance.

The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Competes with the Ford RangerGMC CanyonNissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma. Ford is overhauling the Ranger for 2023, bringing new styling, tech, and a hardcore Raptor trim to the United States for the first time. The Nissan Frontier was all-new for the 2022 model year and came with intuitive tech and a supremely comfortable interior. The Toyota and GMC are aging, and while they provide plenty to like, they won’t stand up to the new trucks. That said, GMC’s trucks are tightly wound with Chevrolet’s, so the Canyon is likely not far behind the Colorado in the makeover line.
