For the U.S. market, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan release date is October 2021. At that time, the compact crossover SUV will get minor styling changes, new infotainment technology, improved driver assistance systems, and a simplified lineup that includes S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line trim levels.
If the SUV isn’t arriving in America for more than a year, why is the automaker sharing information about the improvements now? The changes for the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan will be available in Europe well before that date, so rather than allow speculation to run rampant, VW is making it clear what will and will not be available to its U.S. customers.

In spite of the SUV’s technological advancements, though, Volkswagen says 2022 Tiguan prices will remain competitive with vehicles such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Toyota RAV4.
Though it looks similar to the current Tiguan, the updated 2022 Tiguan has a restyled bumper and grille, revised wheel choices, new LED headlights and taillights, and a couple of new paint colors called Kings Red and Oryx White. The sporty R-Line versions of the SUV have larger aluminum wheels and a more aggressive appearance, especially in front.

Volkswagen makes digital instrumentation standard in the 2022 Tiguan, with either an 8-inch or a 10-inch display depending on the trim level. A new steering wheel also debuts, complete with new touch-sensing controls. Titan Black and Storm Grey interior colors return, with new patterns and stitching, joined by Cinnamon leatherette (a yellowish tan) and Noisette leather (a brick red). Three new metallic interior trim patterns are also available for the 2022 Tiguan.

For the most part, if you want extras for a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, you upgrade to the next trim level. An exception to this rule is the available third-row seat, a rarity in the Tiguan’s segment. Understand, however, that this seat is not suitable for adults and kids will want to ride back there for short trips only.
Cloth, leatherette, and leather upholstery is available for the Tiguan, along with ambient cabin lighting with 15 different colors and a panoramic glass sunroof. A Fender premium sound system is also offered for the new Tiguan, and Volkswagen says it has improved the available easy open-and-close power tailgate.
Additionally, the new Tiguan is available with an automatic climate control system that uses new touch-sensing controls including sliders for adjusting the temperature and fan speed.
Volkswagen makes no changes to the 2022 Tiguan’s powertrain. That means the SUV continues with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 184 horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque, fed to the front wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. A 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is optional.
Volkswagen equips every 2022 Tiguan with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning.
Upgrade to the Tiguan SE, and the SUV includes lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and both Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist systems.
Traffic Jam Assist adds an automated steering function at lower vehicle speeds, helping to remove some of the stress associated with tough commutes. Volkswagen did not define Emergency Assist, which is also coming to the refreshed 2021 Arteon, promising more details on this technology at a later date.
At the top of the Tiguan lineup, the SEL R-Line adds a predictive adaptive cruise control system with dynamic road sign recognition. It automatically adjusts vehicle speed depending on posted limits and for upcoming curves or corners that require a lower speed to safely negotiate.
With the 2022 Tiguan, Volkswagen gives its compact crossover SUV a next-generation infotainment system sitting on a new platform known as the Modular Infotainment Matrix 3 (MIB 3).
Equipped with more robust microchips and processors, the new MIB 3 infotainment system is faster to respond to user inputs and is powerful enough to support new features. It is standard in every Tiguan, equipped with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with S trim and with a larger 8-inch touchscreen display in other versions of the SUV.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto debut with MIB 3, and the system allows for greater personalization to different drivers.
Volkswagen is the source of the information in this article. It was accurate as of June 30, 2020 but may have changed since that date.
