Introduction

Kia has introduced a freshened 2020 Sportage at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show, and the changes make the compact crossover SUV more appealing. When it goes on sale before the summer of 2019, it will come in standard LX, new sporty-looking S, mid-range EX, and upscale SX trim levels.

Exterior Features

In addition to adding the S trim level, which pairs the Sportage’s standard engine with visual upgrades, all versions of the SUV receive styling changes that give this crossover a more refined look.

The changes include new headlights and fog lights, a restyled grille and lower front air intake, modified front and rear bumpers, a different exhaust tip, and redesigned aluminum wheels ranging in size from 17 inches to 19 inches in diameter.

Additionally, Kia offers the 2020 Sportage in a new Steel Gray Metallic paint color.

Interior Features

Inside, the changes to the 2020 Kia Sportage are not as dramatic. There is a new steering wheel as well as modified air vent trim, and some versions of the Sportage are available with Sofino leatherette upholstery.

Under the Hood

Kia makes no mechanical modifications to the 2020 Sportage. The SUV continues to offer a standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with LX, S, and EX trim. It generates 181 horsepower and 175 lb.-ft. of torque.

Upgrade to the Sportage SX and the SUV is equipped with a rousing turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine cranking out 240 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. Note, however, that with the optional all-wheel-drive system, this engine is de-tuned to produce 237 horsepower.

A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard with both engines, delivering power to the front or all four wheels.

Safety

No doubt, with the Sportage’s new headlights Kia aims to improve the SUV’s safety rating with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The outgoing 2019 Sportage musters no better than a “Marginal” rating for the headlights, preventing the otherwise impressively safe Sportage from earning a “Top Safety Pick” designation.

Additionally, Kia is offering new safety features for the 2020 Sportage, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, pedestrian detection for the forward collision warning system, lane keeping assist, and automatic high beam assist. A driver attention warning system can tell if you’re drowsy or distracted, and issue a warning that perhaps the time has come to take a break.

Technology

Every 2020 Kia Sportage is equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a feature previously reserved for upper trim levels. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard for 2020, features previously optional on the Sportage LX. Kia has also added wireless smartphone charging to the Sportage for 2020.
