If your eyes detect
Mazda's "Kodo" design language in the Scion iA's flanks, they do not deceive you. With the debut of the Scion iA, the youth-oriented division of Toyota Motor gets its first sedan to sell, courtesy of Mazda. Aside from the redesigned front bumper and grille, wheels, and the exterior badges, this "Scion" is all Mazda.
That's true inside and under the hood, too, perhaps making the iA unexpectedly appealing at a price point that Scion says will start at less than $17,000 when the car goes on sale in the fall of 2015.
Exterior Features
Aside from Mazda design cues and the Scion iA's reworked face, this new entry-level, subcompact sedan is equipped with standard 16-in. aluminum wheels. A mix of chrome and piano black exterior trim helps give the car a mor
e attractive look.
Interior Features
Soft-touch materials and a 7-in. display audio system that sits atop the dashboard dominate the Scion iA's cabin. A control knob within the center console allows the driver to navigate through the audio system's menus and functions. Additionally, the Scion iA is equipped with a passive keyless entry system with push-button starting, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, driver's seat-height adjuster, 60/40 split-folding seat, cruise control, and power operation of the windows, door locks, and side mirrors.
Optional Features
Scion will offer the new iA in what it calls "mono-spec" trim, meaning it will have a relatively generous level of standard equipment and nothing more from the factory. Scion dealers plan to offer a number of accessories for the car, though, including a navigation upgrade for the existing display audio system.
Under the Hood
A 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is the only one offered in the Scion iA, and it makes 106 horsepower. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, and buyers can opt for a 6-speed automatic transmission with a Sport driving mode. As standard equipment, the iA includes Scion Boost free scheduled maintenance and roadside assistance for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles of ownership.
Safety
Every 2016 Scion iA will include a reversing camera as well as a low-speed pre-collision system that is designed to monitor traffic ahead and warn the driver if he or she is about to collide with another vehicle.
Technology
The Scion iA's standard 6-speaker display audio system is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and streaming audio, along with access to Pandora, Aha, and Stitcher radio programming. Alternatively, occupants can connect a smartphone or device via the dual USB ports or the auxiliary audio jack and play your their music. Standard voice-recognition technology is designed to make it easy for drivers to make changes with both hands on the wheel and eyes focused on the road ahead.
